Review: G-Drive mobile hard drive features USB 3, FireWire 800
27 December 2012
Conclusion: G-Technology’s G-Drive mobile is a competent external drive with a longer-than-average warranty. Although it has been updated to offer the faster USB 3 technology, the transfer speeds over this connection were average. There are other drives that are more affordable and offer higher performance, more security, and higher capacity.
Pros: Two FireWire 800 ports, USB 3.0 support, Three-year warranty
Conclusion: The G-Technology G-Drive Mobile is a good choice for the road warrior who needs to Time Machine or transfer data from a pre-2011 Mac to a new one. FireWire plus USB 3.0 will give you the fastest interface on both sides of the upgrade.
Pros: USB 3.0 and FireWire 800. Comes with USB, FireWire 400/800, and FW800 cables. Metal construction. Matches Macs. Dual FireWire 800 ports. 3 Year warranty

Excerpt: (1 items) G-Technology has a reputation for producing high-end, fast Mac-centric hard drives. The company also has a reputation for making similarly designed bulky aluminum drives that are about as aesthetically appealing as cinder blocks. With the G-Drive Mobile USB 500GB, G-Technology is changing its reputation by finally combining a consumer-friendly design with high-end performance.
Conclusion: First ImpressionsG-Technology has been making professional hard drive solutions for the Mac for years and has always backed its drives up with generous warranties. The G Drive mobile comes with a three year warranty, has a different look than that of the mini but still looks better than a lot of the external hard drive solutions for the Mac. Its solid aluminum enclosure is accented with the piano black top, but I still like the look of the G-Drive mini.
Excerpt: The original G-Drive Mobile hard drive was popular with many Mac users as it had both USB and FireWire interfaces. The USB port meant that it could be used with any model of Mac, while those featuring FireWire – that’s practically all bar the MacBook Air – could take advantage of the faster FireWire 800 interface.
slim, light portable drive with solid, attractive design
5400rpm drive only provides moderate performance
Excerpt: G-Technology is now part of the Hitachi group responsible for manufacturing hard disk drives. So G-Technology products feature Hitachi disks on the inside, and some smart and very well constructed cases on the outside.
