    As part of the Freecom’s Mobile range, the ToughDrive Sport has a number of shortcomings that throw into question its ability to function as a go-anywhere device. Sure, you can drop it, play Frisbee with it and even let it loose on a teenager, but when it comes to plugging it into things, then, it falls short. The Mac USB 1.1 issues will only affect a few, but possibly in a catastrophic way. Read more

    It may be slightly tougher than the normal external USB hard drive, but don’t expect the Freecom ToughDrive Sport to be impervious to the elements. It’s also somewhat slow in use. More of a style statement than a serious all-terrain data storage solution. Read more

    Despite the premium involved in a rugged, outdoor-oriented drive like the Toughdrive Sport, Freecom stops just short of making it overpriced. ToughDrive Sport

The ToughDrive Sport is a 2.5 inch mobile external hard drive with integrated USB cable and a choice of three capacities, 250GB, 320GB or 500GB. The unit has a USB2.0 interface with compatibility with USB1.1 ports. Its hard drive is a 2.5-inch SATA with low noise and low power consumption with up to 480 Mbit/s (USB 2.0) data transfer speed. Speed can be increased by using the included Turbo USB 2.0 driver which is compatible for Windows onnly. The hard drive has 256bit MD5 hardware password protection data security feature. It measures 155 x 91 x 21 mm and weighs 260 g. The unit has a 50000 P.O.H. mean time before failure value, is shock resistant up to 300 Gs (1000 G non-operating), and can withstand a 2m free drop on flat surface. The unit comes with a 30cm USB2.0 cable with climbing rope texture, and does not require a power adapter to work. Its operating temperature is between 10ºC-35ºC and a storage temperature of -20ºC-70ºC. The hard drive requires a minimum system compatibility with a PC with Intel Pentium III/AMD Duron 900 MHz or higher, 256MB RAM (Vista: 512MB RAM) or higher, USB 2.0/1.1 port, and Windows 2000/XP/Vista. It is compatible with a Mac with PowerPC G3/G4/G5, Power Book G3/G4 or Intel Mac, 256 MB RAM or higher, USB 2.0/1.1 port and Mac OS X v10.3 or higher.

Features

The ToughDrive Sport features durable, shock resistant hard drive that is ideal for mobile computing. This unit is built with an outdoor active sports design, including integrated USB cable with climbing rope texture. It features an internal anti-shock mechanism that insulates the hard drive from shock and can withstand falling from 2 metres on a flat surface. The unit is equipped with a secure hardware 256 bit password protection feature. The password is encrypted and stored in a chip – the data on the drive can only be accessed by entering the correct password. The obligatory combination of the hardware chip and password to unlock the drive and access the data provides security. The ToughDrive Sport also comes with the Turbo USB 2.0 driver for fast data transfer. The unit also comes with an integrated USB cable therefore not requiring additional connection. The unit features Plug and Play capability enabling connection as additional storage space to a computer. Users will not be required to restart their computer when using the ToughDrive Sport.
