great drive

Jason C., Newegg
21 March 2015
  • Pros: great drive
  • Cons: do not buy from newegg, other sellers are a bit more expensive but newegg will have to ship it twice to ever get it to you

dave, Amazon
28 January 2015
  • Summary: I'm taking a star off because this is a bitch to setup for macs ! Here's why: The fact is, the 1 page pictoral quick start is horriable, mis-informed & non-intuitive ! Buffalo concontrated too much on wireless setup & nothing on file xfer, paticualrly from macs.

Great as USB but not Thunderbolt

Reviewer AX, Staples
27 September 2014
  • Excerpt: Lets put it this way, this is a really good USB Drive but the same cannot be said for Thunderbolt as it does not take advantage of the speed that an Solid State Drive would. But honestly if there were such a computer that did not have USB, then this is probably your best bet.

Unique media streaming device; do NOT mistake it for a regular network drive

Michael Lichter, Amazon
25 July 2014
  • Summary: I really didn't understand what I was getting when I ordered this product. I thought it was simply a network hard drive that Buffalo happened to be marketing to heavy media users. I was wrong. It IS a network hard drive, but it's not a normal one. The ideal use of the drive is as follows.

Fills a need you did not know you needed

Anonymous, Newegg
9 July 2014
  • Summary: Although I initially received a bad unit, Buffalo sent me a replacement quickly. Hopefully they treat retail customers the same way. I contacted Monday evening via e-mail, replacement at my house Wednesday afternoon. I do wish it was a little more rugged.
  • Pros: I got this as a review product, I really would not buy something like this, but looked interesting to test. Simple to connect to using the App (make sure to get the right one, MiniStation Air2, or just scan QR code provided in setup instructions). Lots of options and configuration options in the ...
  • Cons: First unit I received would not charge. I could use it plugged in, but something was wrong with the battery/charging system. You can not charge a device and use the hard drive at the same time. I guess it would just kill the battery to do both at the same time, but be aware of this. No way to kee...

Not the best.

Theodore P., Newegg
1 July 2014
  • Summary: When Newegg offered this assignment I started right away researching the tech. I’m experienced with wifi, NAS, and HDD tech but not really an AIO device combining them all. There are many options out there if you do your research but I can say this is not a horrible drive if you have the money to...
  • Pros: - 25MB/s write speed on USB2.0, 108MB/s write speed on USB 3.0, 3MB/s write speed over wifi. 5MB/s. read speed…this is horribly slow. - 1TB capacity. Tons of storage if, like me, you'll be streaming to tablets and small devices. Then you can re-encode your videos to smaller mp4 files that are ful...
  • Cons: I was worried about that 5MB/s read and write speed over wifi because it seems a little slow if you’re streaming multiple devices. Sure enough, my daughter was watching a hefty 720p mp4 (Frozen for the 500000th time) and as soon as I did anything on another device, be it stream an SD movie, copy ...

It would be nice if the activity indicator light was not on the bottom

T. Curry "TC", Amazon
10 January 2014
  • Summary: I just got this drive from Amazon after one I got off Ebay did not work with Thunderbolt connection. So soon as I sent the Ebay one back to the seller this morning, I got this one this evening.

Great drive, poor warranty rules

Peter K., Newegg
2 December 2013
  • Summary: I purchased this drive along with my then-new Macbook Pro Retina, due to the very fast but not very large flash drive in the MBPR. I put all video, most photos, any movies, and other large, rarely used files on the Buffalo external drive (everything backed-up to larger HDs with Time Machine).
  • Pros: Excellent form factor, rugged, integral cable
  • Cons: Integral cable very short (but long enough for notebook computer), Warranty rule where you cannot pay for replacement and then send back your unit, but need to live 2 weeks without drive...

Fast transfers; crap cable

Brad Chicago, Amazon
1 December 2013
  • Summary: The product delivers on all fronts except one: the cable. This thing is very sensitive and the cord needs to be placed carefully. Be cautious moving the cable around during file transfers, as it has a tendency to easily and frequently disconnect if moved around.

3 yr warranty

Mark D., Newegg
4 September 2013
  • Summary: I have used Buffalo before and while my first one broke shortly out of the box, I still recommend them. I am going out on a limb I know but I even bought another one.
  • Pros: Solid LED indicates activity as well as connection speed and encryption Comes with extender USB3.0 Cable Mil-Spec 3yr warranty 24/7 live support
  • Cons: NO warranty without proof of purchase. Mine broke after 5 days. Buffalo would not RMA it till I could prove where I bought it from even though they confirmed it was made in May of this year. Had to pay one way shipping as well. For a new unit I am dissapointed but this is still within reason. I h...
