Very disappointed with product and support - stay away

Summary: I am very unhappy with the product and the support from Buffalo. I bought this as I had had a disk failure in my laptop and needed somewhere 'secure' and 'reliable' to keep all my files, music, correspondence, personal admin and finance information. Rather than commit my data again to an internal hard drive, I kept it on my 'US Military Grade Shock Protection' Extreme Ministation and backed it up occasionally to a second external HDD of the same brand.
Summary: Tested it briefly on Win7 PC before putting it to final use as MacBookAir backup time machine. Worked fine in both situations. I was looking for a rugged backup that I could take on the road with the Mac. It has to be able to take some bumping around and still provide an encrypted backup target. It also had to work with a single cable that wouldn't get detached and lost in the computer bag or hotel. This fills the bill.
Pros: Front surface is smooth silver and back surface is non-slip gray. Entire case looks to be pretty tough plastic. Even the cable is ruggedized. Formats easily with encryption for OS-X and runs well as Time Machine. There are a couple of slots at the top where you could attach a security lanyard.
Summary: I bought the Hard drive to replace my old USB drive. The Buffalo is self powered and a space saver. I really liked that it came with the software installed on the drive. It was very fast. It took less than 2 hour to do the total backup after the software was installed. I am running USB 2.0. I bought the more rugged unit as I will be using it while I travel to back up my backup my photos.
Excerpt: I purchased this to use as a secondary backup for photo and video files. It is my second Buffalo drive purchase. Transfers are extremely fast even with USB 2 connections. I use this with a MAC so none of the supplied software is usable but that was not my purpose anyway. I would purchase Buffalo drives with preference.
Pros: Attractive Design, Compact, Easy To Set Up, Easy to use, High Capacity, Portable, Quiet, Very Fast Transfers
Summary: The Mini-Station is quite small and easy to use. Quality and quiet. No software! Long format time to NTFS. After a full backup, make your incremental backups, unplug it and set it aside. Use it with Novastor.
Summary: I now own four of these 1TB Buffalo MiniStations. I am a photographer and use them for both storage and backups. To date I have never had a problem with any of the hard drives. I especially love the fact that the usb is nicely tucked away into the side of the drive. It is compact, very robust and travels with me wherever I go. Highly recommended!!
