Buffalo DriveStation Combo 4 (1TB) Review

LAPTOP Magazine
2 September 2008
  • Summary: Although it sports an MSRP of $579, the Buffalo DriveStation Combo 4 is available for as little as $230 through online retailers. For the price, you get a one-year warranty (which is a bit skimpy compared to the Maxtor OneTouch 4 Plus' impressive five-year coverage), excellent transfer speeds (particularly with eSATA), and a nice selection of ports for those who use more than USB connections.

Buffalo DriveStation Combo 4

  • Excerpt: Buffalo’s 500GB DriveStation Combo 4 external drive is the fastest USB drive we’ve ever tested, and it even holds its own on an eSATA connection. That’s thanks to a propriety technology called TurboUSB that squeaks additional speeds out of the device. On Windows XP, a DriveStation connected with TurboUSB improved its synthetic read and write speeds by 20 percent (even though its burst speeds confused our benchmark) over a typical USB connection.
  • Pros: USB, Firewire 400, Firewire 800, and eSATA connections; TurboUSB is speedy.
  • Cons: Not the fastest drive on Vista; security utility comes with a few bugs.

Buffalo DriveStation Combo4 500GB review

  • Excerpt: External hard disks with multiple interfaces tend to be expensive, but Buffalo's DriveStation Combo4 proves that this doesn't have to be the case. In addition to USB, it also has FireWire 400, FireWire 800 and eSATA ports, but costs less than £100. The Combo4 performed consistently well in our file-transfer tests, no matter which interface we used. It was especially fast when copying small files over eSATA.

Buffalo Technology DriveStation Combo 4

  • Pros: Le design, Les performances, Les utilitaires, Les nombreuses connectiques
  • Cons: Peut être son bruit de fonctionnement, s'il fallait trouver quelque chose
