Summary: i write very few reviews, but this item requires a warning. This Buffalo external hard drive failed fatally at 13 months. it has been problematic for the past 2 to 3 months only connecting intermittently. now it spins up, but won't connect to my laptop, EVER. BELIEVE THOSE NEGATIVE REPORTS, PEOPLE. FIND SOMETHING MORE RELIABLE...
Summary: Purchased two units new in August 2013. One unit failed in the first few months of operation and the other unit failed several months after the first. Both were replaced by the factory in an easy process. Then the two replacement units eventually failed in almost the same timeline as the first two. I experienced nice people at Buffalo and complement them on the good service I recieved in gaining needed replacements.
Summary: I bought two of these drives and they both failed, the first one thankfully before I even managed to get any data on it. They have a fan mount in the back of the case but NO FAN! Naturally they overheat and die. Read the other reviews, you'll see the build quality is rubbish. The drive itself is fine, the usb controller with the RAM cache on it is the part that fails. At least you could get your data back, but apparently that voids the warranty by opening the case.

Summary: Drive failed after 3 months. When I called the company, they tried to blame the failure on me. Apparently, the drive is not meant for heavy/normal use. They are going to likely replace the drive, but I have to pay for shipping. Not much sympathy for loss of data and loss of time in setting up a new drive. I will never buy another buffalo product. I have lost all trust in the company.
Summary: I really wanted to love this product. I own a media company and these drives seemed like a great fit. They are small the read and write speeds are extremely fast and they run quite. Unfortunately of the 5 we purchased 8 months ago only 1 is still functional. They all seem to have the same flaw where the computer stops detecting the drive. We have reached out to buffalo and while the offer warranty replacements they have not acknowledged a wide spread issue.
