Excerpt: The Adata drive is one of the sexiest USB drives we have ever tested, and is certainly the thinnest USB drive too, at just 8.9mm thick. It might not sound like much in today’s world of super-thin everything, but this puppy is thin. In fact, our research indicates it is the thinnest USB drive currently available. If this roundup were a beauty contest, the DashDrive would easily win .
Pros: Looks cool; rugged; amazingly thin; software is straight-forward
Cons: Software could confuse people; drive is slower than the others; small capacity; loves fingerprints
Excerpt: Are you looking for an external hard drive that is thin for easy portability? The ADATA DashDrive Elite HE720 is the world’s thinnest USB 3.0 external hard drive at just 8.9mm thick. That is slim enough to easily fit in your pant pocket, purse or laptop bag! This 500GB external hard drive also features a “One touch backup” function which automatically backs up and synchronizes data.
Conclusion: There is no question that the DashDrive Elite HE720 is a good-looking device that you will be proud to show off to your friends. Stainless steel has a classic good appearance in spite of its tendency to attract fingerprints. That same stainless steel construction adds to the feeling of solidity when handling the device, and in general the DashDrive Elite HE720 feels very well constructed.
Pros: Compact form factor, Good-looking stainless steel finish, Fast read and write performance, Solid construction
Cons: External finish tends to smudge, Included USB 3.0 cable a bit short, Backup button probably useless in most applications
ADATA DashDrive Elite HE720 2.5″ 500GB External Hard Drive Review

Conclusion: I have to say that this drive has really impressed me. I love the 9H stainless steel shell that encompasses the 500GB Seagate hard drive even it does happen be a fingerprint magnet. The slim build and single short cable means that it will easily slip into a jacket pocket or bag when moving from place to place. Also as mentioned before, the drive is surprisingly light considering its a hard drive inside with a steel casing.
Conclusion: What is there to know about portable hard drives? Step into any PC component store and you can pick up a compact drive that offers generous capacity and swift USB 3.0 connectivity for less than 50 nicker. Job done. But if you do like to push the boat out, there are a range of drives tailored for specific customers; some offer over-the-air access from smartphones and tablets, while others tout a much higher capacity .
ADATA DashDrive Elite HE720 500GB USB 3.0 Portable Hard Drive Review
12 November 2012
Summary: Final Thoughts
When it comes down to it ADATA has a very solid product in the DashDrive Elite HE720 Portable Hard Drive. First lets talk about speed, gone are the days of slow USB 2.0 drives. Now that USB 3.0 is becoming more standard almost all new external hard drives have USB 3.0 connectivity. Having USB 3.0 with this drive means you are going to see around a 3x speed increase. That means your file transfers are going to go much faster.
Pros: – Small, thin design, – Stainless steel casing, – USB 3.0, – Does not require external power
Summary: Let's do one more benchmark, a synthetic test with Sandra, just to see if we can match the results we've seen in HD Tach. The drive index test is what I refer to. Higher = Better.
Sandra also needs an unformatted partition to be able to measure write performance, hence the lacking result for that one as well as we can not cache an unformatted partition. But 86 MB/sec is reached quite easily.
The ADATA DashDrive Elite HE720 is an incredibly fun product.
