Not as bad as it is painted

Anonymous, Newegg
20 July 2012
  • Summary: When I first got this device it was driving me crazy connected to a Windows 7 Pro 64 bit system on an Asus P6X58D Premium Motherboard. Kept constantly dropping out when transferring lots of data.
  • Pros: Reasonable price, Looks OK and Vantec has very good support.
  • Cons: None

Vantec NST-D400S3

Robert K., Newegg
31 March 2012
  • Summary: Seems to be manufactured with sub-par components....
  • Pros: I am a professional photographer, and this was a good way to economically back up my image data.
  • Cons: The on/off switch died after using the device a total of thirty times.

Worked for 17 months until failure

Robert K., Newegg
12 March 2012
  • Summary: I purchased this almost a year and a half ago for the purpose of backing up my image files (I'm a professional photographer), and learned about the product from a fellow photographer at an Adobe Lightroom workflow seminar.
  • Pros: Nice idea in theory...
  • Cons: Generally unreliable likely due to cheap components, etc.

AAAARRGH!!

JOHN R., Newegg
29 January 2012
  • Summary: EVERY file that I though I tranfered was corrupt or just not there. All of my files are 4gb or bigger, so this may work on smaller transfers but not large ones. I am no newbie at this. I have been using USB 2.0 docks for my work and thought I would improve my speed by switching to USB 3.0.
  • Pros: ....none
  • Cons: I bought the first one, it worked for one or two files then lost connection with the computer. This happened repeatedly. I contacted their customer service (with no response), looked for updates and patches, checked my USB 3.0 drivers and still no luck. Returned it to Newegg for a new one, same t...

Useless

Matthew W., Newegg
4 January 2012
  • Summary: Pretty much a complete waste of time and money. Even after the latest firmware update, it still does the same thing. Start accessing data, connection drops. Tried multiple cables, multiple computers, with Asmedia, NEC, and Renesis USB 3 controllers. Same result.
  • Pros: Nice in concept
  • Cons: Doesn't work when using more than 1 drive at a time, which kind of defeats the purpose of a dual drive dock. Always ends up dropping the connection when I actually start to access or write data.

User Review

Garron F., Newegg
23 June 2011
  • Summary: I should have read reviews before picking this one up.
  • Pros: Faster than my Esata drive
  • Cons: Disconnects from system every now again. Won't read two of my drives at the same time (same series, not same model).

Nice in theory, but doesn't work in USB 3.0

Dennis B., Newegg
2 April 2011
  • Summary: White isn't a good color for a computer peripheral. I am returning this item.
  • Pros: Nice looking - Uses only one USB 3.0 cable.
  • Cons: 1. Would not transfer at USB 3.0 speeds on my up-to-date Lenovo W510, even after installing the firmware update to the dock. 2. Firmware update was terrible to get installed on the dock under WIN7 Pro. 3.

It seems to be better with new cable.

Anonymous, Newegg
12 February 2011
  • Summary: It doesn't seem to be dropping as much when I transfer from an internal drive, in between two 1 tb drives within the dock, and from esata dock to this dock. Vantec support was pretty good at responding quickly (less than a days wait) and some what useful as well since the cable seems to fix my...
  • Pros: It's been working much better with the new usb 3.0 cable vantec eventually sent me (probably 10 emails and after trying several things). Faster than my esata dock.
  • Cons: It was intermittently disconnecting during large transfers (larger than 100 gb). Yes, it might be annoying to need a spare cable to test, but your alternative is rma for new unit or return with 10% loss and shipping expense.

Unreliable

JONATHAN B., Newegg
10 February 2011
  • Pros: It comes with all the cables you'll need to hook it up. The thing is fast...when it works.
  • Cons: Very unreliable. It might show the hard drive connected but Windows thinks the drive is not formatted, or the drive never shows up at all. Works 1 out of 10 times.

Frequent drops

Jennifer L., Newegg
6 February 2011
  • Summary: Make sure you update the firmware first if you plan to use USB 3.0 If you plan to use USB 2.0 then a firmware update should not be necessary.
  • Pros: Good design Pretty blue LED Can hold up to 2 drives USB 3.0 compatible
  • Cons: Had troubles with it at first. I use USB 3.0 and the dock continued to drop the drives during heavy data transfer. Found out it is a bug with the USB 3.0 protocol and a firmware update should resolve the issue
