Aluratek Libre is great
ANTHONY G., Newegg
30 July 2011
Pros: Easy to read non reflective LCD screen; Can use up to a 32GB SD card; wide variety of file formats; Books can be bought from many websites; Decent battery life; Easy to use; Compact enough to fit in a coat pocket; Aluratek support is good.
Pros: Mom loves it. Reads PDF files, MOBI, lost of other files. Uses standard SD card for memory. You can just drag files straight to the thing if you plug it into a computer. Comes with lots of goodies. Free books included. It's water resistant, unlike most others. sliders to turn pages. Variable font sizes. Has a picture viewer. Doesn't force you to use one specific ebook format. Lets you read in landscape or portrait.
Cons: Battery life is only like 48 hours continuous time. Could be longer.
Cons: Customer support for defective units is nonexistent. I started a ticket for the unit I bought that quit working the first of December and Aluratek's support section will not respond. The only thing I know to do is to contact my state's attorney general, because this company is not honoring their warranty. If you buy this unit, you had better pray it does not quit, because their customer support will not respond.
Pros: Unit performed great for the 7 months it worked.
Cons: After approximately 7 months, the unit would not boot up. On power up, it hung at the Alluratel logo and would not go to menu. Have reset it according to website instructions, with no improvement noted. My primary complaint is the support staff at Aluratek. I started a support ticket on December 12 2010, and I am still waiting for RMA numbers and instructions. They state they answer support ticket requests within 24 business hours but that is not true. The only way I ...
Summary: loading the internal software (picture reader and ebook reader programs) takes a long time, which I expected as they dont put blazing power hungry processors in these things, but page turns are quick and thats the main thing.
Pros: NO DRM!!! (well, I guess you can use DRM if you want, so they say)
Cons: LCD screen, I was nervous about it before purchase but went ahead anyway because of the format support. Dont worry about it, the LCD is not backlit, its reflective, easy to read, sunlight readable, though you will need an external light source if reading in the dark.
Pros: This is my first e-book reader and honestly, will probably be my last, unless this one wears out. I mean, it's a READER for goodness' sake. If you want perfect picture and chart rendering then you need a laptop or at least a netbook, not an e-book reader. It puts the words clearly on the screen from an excellent array of formats, with adjustable font sizes and will even display the illustrations if there are any. If you read the instructions fully, (unlike me) the fir...
Cons: None, but it is important to note that the owner's manual is only located on the reader itself, not as a physical document. Unless this was just an oversight with my unit, it would probably be useful to have a printed manual included.
Pros: Supports many formats, small, thin, nice screen, decent battery life, and comes with thoughtful accessories (case especially). Also nice they include some free books (which you can find numerous places on the web, but it saves you the hassle of finding & downloading them).
Cons: Updated the firmware right out of the box which took some patience (manual is very vague in some areas of the updating procedure).
Pros: I bought this for the price, I didn't need all the external connectivity the other brands were touting. Also I liked the different formats that for some reason were missing, on the others. I take mine everywhere, and have not had any trouble out it since I bought it. Battery life was however another issue. Actually the battery was just fine. I updated the software on my Libre and no problem with battery life after that. Screen is very easy to read, has multiple fonts ...
Cons: Battery life WAS an issue, see above, for that detail.
