Works with TXT and PDF. Issues in other formats.

Kim Y., Newegg
23 March 2011
  • Summary: Overall I find that this eBook reader is fairly good for PDF documents; it tries to reflow the document and has so far done a good job in my experiences. But because I read daily, it was important for me to have a good quality device that was also effortless and enjoyable. The Aluratek Libre Pro was not the device for me. It had screen glare, lackluster performance, uncomfortable ergonomics, low battery life, etc.
  • Pros: - Reads PDF's fairly well. - Very low price point.
  • Cons: - Screen has moderate (ie. noticeable) glare under reading lamp. - Needs to be charged every 2-3 days after moderate use (so not very ideal for long voyages to other countries). - EPUB books don't support bookmarking!! (They always get erased when you go back to the library screen) - MOBI has caused my ebook reader to "crash" back to the home screen, or even shut the unit off at times. - Almost no ergonomics or comfort in the design and layout. - Very cheap plasticy f...

THE Universal reader

Ryan F., Newegg
21 February 2011
  • Summary: We got this for my mother for Christmas this year. We looked at the Kobo, Nook, and the Kindle. For what mom does, which is read ebooks, this was the best deal. It has a very simple, but utilitarian interface for reading books. Mom loves it, and the screen is very easy to read. Once we read that this was water resistant(everything is behind heavy rubberized covers) we were sold on it. If you're going to get this, go download an ebook manager like Caliber.
  • Pros: Mom loves it. Reads PDF files, MOBI, lost of other files. Uses standard SD card for memory. You can just drag files straight to the thing if you plug it into a computer. Comes with lots of goodies. Free books included. It's water resistant, unlike most others. sliders to turn pages. Variable font sizes. Has a picture viewer. Doesn't force you to use one specific ebook format. Lets you read in landscape or portrait.
  • Cons: Battery life is only like 48 hours continuous time. Could be longer.

An "OK" Reader

Anonymous, Newegg
4 January 2011
  • Summary: I have two of these, one white (gift for my girlfriend) and one black, mine. I find the overall size of the device to be "correct" for me and it works exactly as advertised. You do get what you pay for and this device has ALL the features I want. If you want more features like color, spend more.
  • Pros: Text is high quality in all lighting environments. Font choices are excellent. Reads Epub format best. Battery lasts a long time. The device is light and easy to hold.
  • Cons: Makes a mess of "PDF" formatted books at times. The "flow" feature works but is quite primitive.

Pitiful Customer Support

Anonymous, Newegg
3 January 2011
  • Summary: Du yourself a favor and stay clear of this unit. It is great when it works, but you are in trouble if it quits while under warranty.
  • Pros: The unit worked great for several months.
  • Cons: Customer support for defective units is nonexistent. I started a ticket for the unit I bought that quit working the first of December and Aluratek's support section will not respond. The only thing I know to do is to contact my state's attorney general, because this company is not honoring their warranty. If you buy this unit, you had better pray it does not quit, because their customer support will not respond.

Aluratek support is terrible!!!!!

Anonymous, Newegg
22 December 2010
  • Summary: Terrible customer technical support. This is the first negative review I have ever given on a product purchased at Newegg. Would suggest Newegg personnel remove these products from their product line if the manufacturer will not support them in a timely manner.
  • Pros: Unit performed great for the 7 months it worked.
  • Cons: After approximately 7 months, the unit would not boot up. On power up, it hung at the Alluratel logo and would not go to menu. Have reset it according to website instructions, with no improvement noted. My primary complaint is the support staff at Aluratek. I started a support ticket on December 12 2010, and I am still waiting for RMA numbers and instructions. They state they answer support ticket requests within 24 business hours but that is not true. The only way I ...

Good for tech knowledgeable

Troy K., Newegg
13 November 2010
  • Summary: This is a techies Ereader If you want steve jobs walled garden, dont buy this If you dont know what a file format is (.epub .fb2 .txt etc) and dont want to learn, dont buy this. If you want a simple device that does exactly what you want and doesnt try to anticipate your wishes or do things behind your back, and will not answer to anyone but the person holding it. buy this.
  • Pros: NO DRM!!! (well, I guess you can use DRM if you want, so they say) This was vital to me, I did not want any company to be able to remove access to my ebooks. good format support, seems to like epub the most and PDF the least but does handle all of them adequately. Reflow function works nicely on PDFs. Battery last a long time, depending on usage of course.
  • Cons: LCD screen, I was nervous about it before purchase but went ahead anyway because of the format support. Dont worry about it, the LCD is not backlit, its reflective, easy to read, sunlight readable, though you will need an external light source if reading in the dark. loading the internal software (picture reader and ebook reader programs) takes a long time, which I expected as they dont put blazing power hungry processors in these things, but page turns are quick and ...

User Review

Nathaniel H., Newegg
29 July 2010
  • Summary: With recent price cuts with the Kindle and Nook I can not recommend this product. At the time of my purchase the Kindle and Nook were much higher in price and the lacking features warranted the price difference. Now the Kindle and Nook can be had for a similar price with the added features of WiFi, 3G (some models), book reading, direct access to online stores, web access, etc.
  • Pros: > Crisp Screen > No page turn flashing > Large Book format support > Read and listen to music at the same time > Responsive page turns > Buttons are solid > When viewing pictures, they are gray scaled very well > Gif support includes animated gifs, (don't expect super fast gifs or large gifs to change frames at the same speed as your desktop) > Ok audio quality, worth not using 2 devices while reading & listening to music > 5 eggs because it works exactly as described...
  • Cons: > Features are now lacking compared to similarly priced e-readers.
