Excerpt: I daresay we’ve all been to family get-togethers at which we’ve quietly fantasised about something along these lines. Feigning joy at being reunited with blood relations with whom we share almost nothing but mutual resentment and contempt, obliged to discuss what we’re doing with our lives and (invariably) our careers, what we’ve achieved, what a shame it is we’re not doing as well as so-and-so, and shouldn’t we consider doing this instead… honestly, haven’t we all from...
Excerpt: Exploitation aficionados who bemoan the Disneyfication of Times Square and the loss of the amazing, decrepit grand dames of grindhouse that lined West 42nd Street will feel a frisson of memory as strong as anything prompted by a Proust madeleine while watching You're Next. Reuniting A Horrible...
Excerpt: Adam Wingard’s You’re Next has been hyped as a fresh new take on the “home invasion” horror subgenre, helped by the fact that Wingard is associated with the supremely talented horror filmmaker Ti West. (West appears in You’re Next , and both Wingard and West directed segments of the horror anthology V/H/S .) Unfortunately, there’s not much here except one grindhouse-style trick: a female character fights back rather than becoming a victim.
Excerpt: You’re Next is one of those films I almost hate to review, because I liked it a great deal, but that was aided by the fact that I had no idea what I was walking into. In fact, the trailer for this film advertises something completely different than what is actually shown on the screen. So, if you want a surprise, just take my word for it, go see the movie.
Excerpt: It’s not easy to craft a film that is both an acknowledgement and re-invigoration of a genre. You’re Next breathes fresh life into a genre that’s been dominated in recent years by foreign horror imports, with the last good American home invasion film being the eerily effective The Strangers.
Excerpt: You’re Next starts off with obligatory horror staple, the gratuitous sex scene followed by the wander round the house near naked scene. But once that’s out the way, it’s down to blood and gore, with a double homicide in the neighbours house. Then we pause as we get to know the other neighbours, arriving at their remote holiday mansion, for a family get together with the most dysfunctional families ever.
