Stoner alien flick 'Paul' is fitfully funny

Las Vegas Weekly
16 March 2011
  • Excerpt: There’s something oddly dispiriting about the basic comic premise of Paul , which amounts to this: What if an extraterrestrial actually did crash-land on Earth back in the late 1940s, as the UFO nuts claim? And what if this hyper-intelligent being from another world, while looking just like the standard description of “grays”—massive bald head, spindly frame, wraparound eyes, no discernible ears—turned out to think, talk and behave exactly like Seth Rogen?

Film Review: Paul

FilmJournal
15 March 2011
  • Excerpt: Paul marks the third big-screen pairing of Simon Pegg and Nick Frost, the British comic thespians best known on these shores for Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz. It’s also notably the first picture they’ve made together without their longtime collaborator, Edgar Wright, who co-wrote and directed...

Paul

Empire Online

  • Conclusion: Broader and more accessible than either Shaun Of The Dead or Hot Fuzz, Paul is pure Pegg and Frost - clever, cheeky and very, very funny. You'll never look at E. T. in the same way again.

Film Guide
12 March 2012
  • Excerpt: Written by and starring Simon Pegg and Nick Frost, Paul travels in the same direction as their previous collaborations Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz in that it’s an ode to friendship and brotherly love, this time however, it’s an extra-terrestrial ménage à trois with the unexpected arrival of Paul, the slacker alien on the run. But lets back it up a bit.

Expert Review

FILMDUDE
14 April 2011
  • Excerpt: Science-fiction films usually present good value, and especially ones with extra-terrestrials, but you leave wanting more from "Paul". What was once cute about a bromance road trip loses its charm when the bond between the self-confessed geeks becomes a little too pronounced. The movie strives for mainstream appeal, fielding a varied range of jokes from satirical science-fiction writers, toilet humour and a galaxy of cultural references.

Paul (2011)

10 March 2012
