DVD Review: ParaNorman (2012)

Brutal as Hell
9 February 2013
  • Excerpt: Kiddie horror is a wonderful thing which we shouldn’t be afraid to embrace as grown-ups. Most lifelong horror fans start early, and I think it’s fair to say that for a lot of us our entry point to the genre is likely to be a movie with something of a juvenile bent. As I’ve mentioned at least once or twice, for me that entry point was The Monster Squad, along with Gremlins, Critters, The Gate and other such 80s classics which redefined the boundaries for scary, grisly...

Review: 'ParaNorman'

Toledo Blade
5 December 2012
  • Excerpt: Norman, the young hero of the animated delight ParaNorman, hears dead people. He sees them, too. So there's no sense trying to comfort him because you think he's missing his dead grandma too much. Norman, voiced by Kodi Smit-McPhee of The Road, has a plump pal, Neil (Tucker Albrizzi). He has a shallow teen sister, Courtney (Anna Kendrick).

Film Review: ParaNorman

15 August 2012
  • Excerpt: Stop-motion animation has carved out its own spooky sub-genre, Tim Burton leading the way with The Nightmare Before Christmas, Corpse Bride and the upcoming Frankenweenie. It must have something to do with all those inanimate objects coming magically alive through the craft and patience of...

Film review: 'ParaNorman'

Las Vegas Weekly
13 August 2012
  • Excerpt: Stop-motion animation is a tedious, time-consuming process, and the effort required to meticulously set up and move tiny models one frame at a time often lends the final result a feeling of handmade care. That’s certainly the case with ParaNorman , the second feature from stop-motion studio Laika , following 2009’s wonderful Coraline .

  • Conclusion: Ingenious and wonderfully detailed, though better in its imaginative horror than its slightly too-broad comic knockabout. It’s not quite on the level of Coraline, but it’s proper summer fun with some dark delights.

Expert Review

10 January 2013
  • Excerpt: "ParaNorman" has an admirable vision; introducing a younger audience to the world of horror. From the outset, the slightly warped aesthetics grab your attention, signalling an animation far from normal. There are plenty of ghouls, but they are a small distraction. At its core, the story is about a kid fighting his fears and the bullies at school. It's a touching experience and one with welcome bouts of humour.
