Prefer the book

  • Summary: The film never lived-up to the book; perhaps the book was too vast or complex to be adapted-anyhow I was disappointed with the film.

A unique view of India and Pakistan post partition

chippyash, LOVEFiLM
13 February 2014
  • Summary: Brilliant story - I'll have to go buy the book now! Salman Rushdie has not been on my reading list for a long time, but his story and screen adaptation of what is obviously a difficult narrative has changed my mind. Beautiful cinematography. Deepa Mehta has painted a picture that is visually stimulating, in some ways weird and sometimes uncomfortable, but always engaging. Now I have to go search out a few more of her films.

A refreshing film

a customer , 31 Jan 2014, LOVEFiLM

  • Summary: a pleasure to watch and great to have Salman Rushdie narrating too. But an Indian in 1947 would not have used the word 'movie' for film- shame that everything gets americanised nowadays

Indian X-men

a customer , 24 Jan 2014, LOVEFiLM
24 January 2014
  • Summary: A long, drawn out Indian X-men. A ridiculous story, but executed fairly well. Hard to read subtitles, with ever changing actors for the same characters.

One of the best films I've seen

Snriabriaf, LOVEFiLM
4 August 2013
  • Summary: One of the best films I've seen. Having read the book I approached it with scepticism: I couldn't believe it was filmable. But it stands alone, whilst capturing the essence of the magic and tragedy of this epic tale. The photography alone deserves an award.
