Summary: Pascal Chaumeil's Heartbreaker is a french film that gives you the unexpected twist of a romantic comedy at its finest. It presents the typical man that every woman comes upon in her life, the man that takes women for granted and tries to "sweep her off her feet" by using his typical seductive lines.
Summary: This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. It is a rare thing, these days, to find a challenging read. Books, being what they are, an antiquated form of entertainment, most novels, as a result, follow a structure that hews closely to the screenplay: three acts, and almost always, without fail, plot-oriented.
Summary: Take away Monaco (where the film was largely set), constant sunshine, 5 start hotels, Vanessa Paradis strutting about in top to toe designer gear at all times and the pervading "money is no object" aspirational aspect of the film and what are you left with? Not a lot I'm afraid. The supporting cast does a good job but Romain Duris does not work for me as a leading man. Too short and too skinny maybe? I've loved him in other films but this one left me rather lukewarm.
Summary: I always forget how good the French are at physical comedy. This is an old story, but the lead actor brings great comedy and freshness to it. Vanessa Paradis didn't have to act much, but she plays the straight well and is certainly interesting to watch. The real finds in the movie are the supporting actors - her randy friend, and his sadistically creative sister and brother-in-law. You'll leave the theater smiling, but it's largely fluff.
Conclusion: I didn't realise it was subtitled until we started watching the film.. But oh my days, it was really REALLY GOOD! It's packed with everything you need for a great night in: comedy, romance, action.. It would have been better if we didn't have to read throughout the film, but they made it sooo good, even my dad watched it and laughed! Great acting, great story - definitely will be updating my little DVD collection!
Conclusion: This mostly in French comedy film is excellent. Smart, witty and entertaining without being too cheesy, serving up a refreshingly enjoyable rom-com. A total welcomed surprise and I cannot praise it enough for it's fresh style, formula and efforts. A triumph.
Conclusion: I saw this movie a couple days ago and thought it was especially funny and action-packed for being a rom com. I also thought Romain Duris and Vanessa Paradis were a great match. I will probably buy this movie for my girlfriend for Christmas because she liked it a lot!
