Going The Distance

thelmadams.com
3 September 2010
  • Excerpt: Aspiring reporter Erin ( Drew Barrymore ) meets record exec Garrett ( Justin Long ) at an NYC bar, and shares his bong and bed that night. Though Erin at first only wants a summer fling before she returns to grad school at Stanford, once the fall hits, they try to keep the passion alive long-distance. The film’s biggest problem: The costars — despite their real-life are-they-or-aren’t-they relationship — lack the crazy spark that’s needed in good romantic comedies.

Movie Review: Going the Distance

laweekly.com
2 September 2010
  • Excerpt: GOING THE DISTANCE "What really matters is what you like, not what you are like," says John Cusack in High Fidelity, a very good romantic comedy about a 30-something man who can't maintain a relationship, partially because he's holding on to stale record-nerd dreams. Going the Distance is a not-very-good romantic comedy about the same kind of guy — Garrett (Justin Long), a frustrated A&R drone at a New York record label, who falls for Erin (Drew Barrymore), a 31-year-old...

'Going the Distance' hardly makes it out of the gate

lasvegasweekly.com
1 September 2010
  • Excerpt: Real-life off-and-on couple Drew Barrymore and Justin Long have a nice natural chemistry in the otherwise misbegotten romantic comedy Going the Distance , but their rapport is just about the only thing the movie gets right. Distance is seemingly lost as to what to do with Garrett (Long) and Erin (Barrymore) once they get together. They plan for a low-key fling before she has to leave New York City, but after six weeks they’re hopelessly in love.

Going The Distance

Film Guide

  • Excerpt: Relationships are difficult enough in the real world, but when they get the Hollywood treatment, they get to a whole new level of difficult. But is Hollywood just mimicking life, especially when it comes to rom-coms? It’s certainly easy enough to see the ironic truth to the way Garrett’s (Justin Long) relationship crashes and burns on his girlfriends birthday, just because he doesn’t understand the female mind.

  • Conclusion: If it is at times a bit indie-by-numbers without the courage of all its convictions, this is a grittier, saltier than usual rom-com populated with laughs, smarts and a couple you can root for.

Expert Review

FILMDUDE
2 September 2010
  • Excerpt: "Going the Distance" is a pretty stock-standard romantic comedy. However, having a couple on either sides of the country attemps a twist that simply doesn't work. The pace feels rushed and you never quite feel the chemistry that is meant to be keeping the couple together despite the odds. The leads put in a likeable effort, but the movie as a whole ends up feeling a bit strained, and some moments are just plain awkward.

Going the Distance
