'Drive' is a stylistic, memorable thriller

Las Vegas Weekly
14 September 2011
  • Excerpt: From a distance, Drive looked vaguely like a remake of Walter Hill’s 1978 cult classic The Driver , in which an emotionally constipated wheelman operates by his own inscrutable code of ethics. But the new film (actually based on a recent novel by James Sallis), with its hot-pink neon credits and driving synth-rock score, instead presents itself as the great lost action movie of the mid-’80s.

Film Review: Drive

FilmJournal
12 September 2011
  • Excerpt: At first glance, Nicolas Winding Refn's nameless protagonist (Ryan Gosling) has little to recommend him: He's handsome in a bland, unthreatening way, but that satin baseball jacket with the green-and-gold scorpion design on the back screams "dork," and the everyday art of pleasant small talk...

Drive

Film Guide
22 January 2012
  • Excerpt: Very rarely will a film transcend genre boundaries and offer a mix of Hollywood-style action and arthouse flair, which is what makes Nicolas Winding Refn’s Drive so unique and something to be celebrated. Drive tells the story of an unnamed stunt driver (Ryan Gosling) moonlighting as a getaway driver for a crime syndicate run by Bernie Rose (Albert Brooks).

Expert Review

FILMDUDE
27 October 2011
  • Excerpt: "Drive" is an odd little film about a man, his car, and a story that happens in between. By day, our enigmatic driver is quite reserved, and we watch his encounters with trepidation and a pop soundtrack. By night, the base is turned up, and we're placed in the seat next to him evading the police with great thrill. The middle stint might be slow going, but be warned… the violence revs up, and we have no idea where the story is headed.

  • Conclusion: Oh alright, it ain’t Shane. But it is about as much shamelessly disreputable, stylish, ultra-violent fun you’re going to have at the movies this year.

Drive (SE)

3 February 2014
