An Enjoyable Wartime Cat-and-mouse Intrigue

atlasmb, IMDb
18 January 2015
  • Summary: "Contraband" has been frequently compared to the works of Hitchcock, which is no surprise. There is an air of suspense and danger as the two main characters, Captain Andersen (Conrad Veidt) and Mrs. Sorensen (Valerie Hobson), traverse a British city in the darkness of a wartime blackout.

Feeling their way in the London blackout, and towards each other

robert-temple-1, IMDb
8 June 2013
  • Summary: This film, released both as CONTRABAND and as BLACKOUT, is a highly superior suspense and espionage film of the immediate pre-War period. The stars are Conrad Veidt and Valerie Hobson, and the chemistry between them is almost as good as that between Bogart and Bacall in CASABLANCA (1942, in which,...

  • Summary: Almost a complete rip off of Gone in 60 Seconds. Except for the general lack of sports cars. Also J.K. Simmons accent is really bad.

Don't Underestimate the British.

mark.waltz, IMDb
19 November 2012
  • Summary: A gem of early war propaganda, this adventure/comedy is a light-hearted but serious look at Nazi espionage and smuggling. Cast against type, Conrad Veidt plays a heroic Danish ship's captain, a seemingly sinister fellow who is actually a humorous chap on the side of peace.

  • Summary: I thought this movie was really good. I like how the movie wasn't just filmed from the main character's camera. It was more philosophical than most action-adventure movies. very good. The ending was good as well.

Lee, FilmCrave
9 August 2012
  • Excerpt: Mark Wahlberg is on my top 10 actors of all time list for a reason, no not solely on his acting skills which are a tad just above average in my books it's becuase he #1 picks only from the coolest of scripts #2 has a very cool presence on screen expecially as a tough guy.

  • Summary: There's a lot of intriguing heist action going on in this thriller, which is more explosive than inventive. The acting elevates the buy-the-books material a bit, particularly a chameleon-like performance from Giovanni Ribisi and the always-great Ben Foster.
