Conclusion: I really don’t know what happened between the time I saw it in theaters a few months ago and then on DVD. It made my Top-10 list of best films of 2013 then when I saw it on home video it sort of dropped a bit. It’s still a good an entertaining film but nowhere near “masterpiece” material. The video and audio on the DVD is above average and the extras are a bit on the low-end side.
'American Hustle' is little more than Scorsese-light

Excerpt: American Hustle opens with a sequence in which con man Irving Rosenfeld (Christian Bale) painstakingly affixes a toupee to his horrific comb-over. It’s an act meant to symbolize the extent to which the film’s characters attempt to get others to swallow brazen lies, but it can also be read as an unintentional confession on the part of writer-director David O.
Excerpt: Williams shot to fame playing "Money Mike" in Friday After Next and has parlayed his trash-talking pimp persona into a successful stand-up career that's included guest shots on TV, supporting roles in films, and his own HBO special, The Pimp Chronicles Pt. 1 .
Excerpt: Off the back of his success with Silver Linings Playbook, director David O. Russell has brought together another A-class cast for Hustle – that saw nominations in all four Oscar acting categories – and created a strong and clever script. Reinvention is the recurring theme (in case you forget that bit, you’ll be reminded at least half a dozen times throughout the film) as Christian Bale’s Irving Rosenfeld and Amy Adams’ Sydney Prosser forever scramble to make a better...
Excerpt: Despite it not being my favourite this awards season, I was taken by 1970s crime comedy American Hustle – and I won’t lose any sleep if it manages to take out Hollywood’s biggest prize. Off the back of his success for last year’s Silver Linings Playbook, director David O. Russell brought together another A-class cast for Hustle – receiving nominations in all four Oscar acting categories - and created a strong and clever script.
Excerpt: "American Hustle" isn't a memorable crime caper, but it's thoroughly entertaining nonetheless. It doesn't take long to get swept up by the glamour and characters of the time, parading their retro costumes to the sound of a lively 70's soundtrack. Soon begins a battle of wits, each player out to scam the next, in a clever way to keep the story full of suspense. Moments of tension are broken with scenes of laughter, but ultimately there's no real substance to all the cons.
