Review: '21 Jump Street'

Toledo Blade
26 July 2012
  • Excerpt: More than 20 years after the show ran its course, 21 Jump Street is best remembered for launching the career of Johnny Depp and for giving the fledgling Fox network a much-needed buzzed-about show. The film stars an increasingly thinner Jonah Hill and a surprisingly comedic Channing Tatum. Hill plays Schmidt, a poor man's Eminem in high school, and a brainiac with no self-confidence.

  • Conclusion: 21 Jump Street isn't as much fun as its acclaim and box office success suggest, but it is still better than you'd expect of a film version of a silly 1980s Fox TV show. The movie doesn't bring many new ideas to the table, but action comedy is a genre fruitful enough to produce entertaining results in a high school setting.

Film: '21 Jump Street' adds mediocre humor to an old TV concept

Las Vegas Weekly
14 March 2012
  • Excerpt: At the beginning of 21 Jump Street , main characters Schmidt (Jonah Hill) and Jenko (Channing Tatum), a pair of bumbling rookie cops, get reassigned to a unit of undercover officers who infiltrate high schools, with the explanation that it’s “a canceled program from the ’80s” that’s being revived because no one in law enforcement has any original ideas anymore.

21 Jump Street

Empire Online
20 February 2014
  • Conclusion: 21 Jump Street has that Anchorman experimental-chaos vibe, with all the hit-and-miss moments that implies. It’s completely lunatic and sort of a mess. It’s also the funniest high-school comedy to come out of Hollywood in ages.

Expert Review

FILMDUDE
15 March 2012
  • Excerpt: In the case of "21 Jump Street", the fact it doesn't suck is the most surprising. From the very outset, the film makes us aware its 80's reprise is not original, and setting such a tone makes it easier to like and laugh. The bumbling detectives play their parts well, lost in the world of the modern high-school and playing up the geek/jock stereotypes to hilarious results.

21 Jump Street
