Poor hardware Poor warranty

hcarlson, shopping.com
5 April 2009
  • Excerpt: My First DVD player was a Toshiba SD-4990. After playing about 4 movies, it quit working. Checking the internet, the reviews were pretty bad, which I thought unusual. I returned and they replaced with a SD 6100 a newer supposedly better unit (warranty 90 day labor 1 year parts whatever that means)...

REGZA LINK

Zachary C., Newegg
22 March 2009
  • Summary: Paired with a Toshiba Regza 32" LCD. Arrived SUPERFAST with NEWEGG
  • Pros: Regza Link allows me to control both DVD player and TV from my TV remote. Video quality is decent. Humming sound that others mention is non-existant.
  • Cons: Nothing requiring loss of an egg.

Well I do like it...

Kerry K., Newegg
24 February 2009
  • Summary: As I think about it though this is not really needed in my setup. There is a HTPC and an XBOX360 both with HDMI output I can use to play DVD's on. I will replace an older one elsewhere in the house with this one I am sure.
  • Pros: Really does make standard DVD's look great. Not BlueRay but darn nice. Pretty simple setup compared to some DVDs that I have had in the past.
  • Cons: NO TOSLINK! Fortunately I can use the coaxial digital audio but really wanted to use the optical.

Disappointed

Kent H., Newegg
28 January 2009
  • Pros: It's a Toshiba and I haven't had a problem with one yet, and the price was good
  • Cons: Bought this because it plays all styles of dvd's, +R, -R etc. Read the description of all the outputs and inputs Newegg listed a coaxial/ toslink optical output it does not have a toslink output for a optical cable it just has the coaxial output. Would not have bought it if I know it didn't have ...

Some nits worth picking

Anonymous, Newegg
14 January 2009
  • Summary: My old DVD player would automatically turn off when inactive for an extended period of time. This DVD player retains that function, but only if it has been stopped. Neither the screensaver or the automatic power-off will take effect if the DVD is just paused or in a menu.
  • Pros: Fully functional playback so far. Can't exactly comment on the quality of the upscaling since my Toshiba LCD TV does a good job all its own, but I haven't seen my DVDs look better, so it seems like the two work well as a team. The included remote worked fine for me, though for convenience' sake I...
  • Cons: When my unit is off, it emits an electronic buzzing noise, noticeable from several feet away if I'm paying attention and the room is otherwise silent. Thankfully it's slight enough that once ignored, it can easily be forgotten. Hopefully it's just my player and not model-wide, and hopefully it's ...

Great Upscaling DVD Player for any price

George N., Newegg
17 December 2008
  • Pros: Inexpensive. Loads DVDs quickly and they look almost real HD.
  • Cons: Luckily I can use the remote from my Toshiba Regza HDTV as the remote it came with is ugly, but functional.

Beware solutions

Christopher F., Newegg
22 September 2008
  • Summary: I noticed a few of the posts from unhappy users about this DVD player. I received it as a gift, so I didn't purchase it from newegg. I have had to figure out a few things about it to get it working properly though. First I powered in and connected it to my HDMI port on my 1080p HDTV.
  • Pros: Multi format reading ability Multi output conversions Remote has a power on/off button (my other DVD player did not sadly) I received it as a gift It DOES have a resume function, just not a resume screen. If you hit stop it returns to the root menu of the disc, but if you hit play again thereafte...
  • Cons: Output settings do not conveniently reset or automatically configure to device which they are connected to. This is the reason for 4 eggs. See below

Junk

Anonymous, Newegg
7 August 2008
  • Summary: I didn't buy this from newegg which was my mistake. It is slow. It takes forever to load a disk either a comercially recorded disk or a homemade one. I've played with all the settings but nothing would improve the video quality. It will also chang the video display format automatically.
  • Pros: Plays most disks that average home video user would ever need. I got it so I could play videos recorded on DVD DL with mulitple formats. This player does do that. But that is the only good point.
  • Cons: Junk. 1080i and HDMI are probably the only selling points for this brick. You have to be directly in front of the machine for the remote to even work and I've tried new batts and machine location nothing helped. No resume, noisy, slow response time (you have to hold the remote button down for a l...

Buyer Beware

Jason M., Newegg
1 August 2008
  • Summary: I wish Toshiba and Panasonic would make a great product and not a paper weight one so People like me do not give it a bad review.
  • Pros: Don't know of any right now. 2nd day turned on stopped working. Buyer Beware.
  • Cons: Down time having to wait for new one to come in. Please stay away from toshiba and Panasonic dvd players. I order a lot of stuff from new egg. I own my own computer repair and electronics buisness. When something does not work the first time I am out of pocket on the whole deal. Buy something oth...
