Summary: This is a great machine once you get used to it. It does have some flaws - but the postives outweigh the negatives if you have a home entertainment system especially, big screen TV, etc. I bought this unit open box for half price at Best Buy a little over a couple of years back. like I said, it does have issues. I had to request a software upgrade about a year ago from Toshiba so it would be more compatible with a larger variety of recording mediums.
Summary: The on-disk editing and high speed dubbing to DVD are great features. Video quality is super. I was concerned about the compatibility of the copied DVD with another DVD player. It plays with no problems on my standard DVD player and the video looks great. My only complaint is that the remote control has several control buttons for editing menu, quick menu, easy navigate etc.
Summary: My children bought me this for christmas to replace a VCR and DVD. Still learning to set it up and use the wide range if facilities it offers. The one thing we want to do is to record camcorder tapes onto the DVD disk, however the Toshiba will not let us do this, insisting that the camcorder tapes are copyright protected. I have been back to toshiba and they insist it is a camcorder problem. Sony insisit it is a DVD recorder problem - stalemate!!!
Summary: I bought this DVR about two months ago. Wiring up the recorder was straightforward. I ran my cable feed to its antenna/cable input and used a set of A/V ins/outs for my Comcast digital cable box. The component-video and optical digital audio outputs went to my Pioneer receiver. I basically agree with people complaining about manual. It has everything that you need to know how to operate DVR but you need to study it before you can do anything not looking in it.
Summary: I did a lot of research before I decided to buy the RD-XS32. If you are a person who is looking for a simple DVDR to record your old VHS tapes onto cd and your not looking for much else, then maybe one of the lower end DVDR's are for you. If you happen do be a person who is looking for a more hight-tech DVDR that has endless features then this is the mechine for you. The things I love about this recorder are numerous. 1. The 80GB hard dive...A MUST HAVE!!!!! 2.
Summary: I was going to buy a more expensive unit, but when I got to my local electronics store, I found this one on the shelf. The price was HALF what I wanted to spend for a DVD recorder with hard drive, and the guy told me it was a close out. I thought I would give it a whirl, and was glad I did. Once you familiarize yourself with the manual, and spend two to three weeks working with it, it will become second nature like your old VCR.
Summary: I've had this recorder for several weeks now. It was somewhat complicated to use at first, but it has lots of functionality. I've experienced no problem with recording DVD's and playing them back on different DVD players - the picture is just fine (NO "black-level" bug that I can see). Overall this recorder is a good value since it costs $100 less than similar rival products and it includes a Firewire input port. Thumbs Up!
Good so far, can't wait until HD versions come out

Summary: I bought this unit 6 days ago and am sharing my experience so far. I have about 100 hours of miniDVs. I wanted to make a DVD of a friend's wedding, and also I want to make backups of all my old videos to store offsite in case of a house fire. It would take months to make copies of all my old videos onto a PC-based burner. The RD-XS32 does for video what my cassette recorder did for me back in the 1980s: back then I used to make a ton of party-mix tapes.
Summary: This is a unit, that sells for much less than the Panasonic, or the Pioneer, and at the same time offers more than the competition, in terms of technology. The picture on my 55 inch Toshiba, is quite acceptable even in SP mode. There is a CD (french and english), that explains, the basics of installation and operation of the unit.
