Excerpt: With the demise of HD-DVD players of this type were going cheap when I bought this one. What people don't seem to realise is that not only is this a HD-DVD player, but it is an excellent up scaling DVD player, and for the price it was selling for, it was a steal if just for that. The player is a a fairly plain looking all black, it has 6 buttons and a power button on the front and nothing else other than the LCD display and disc tray cover.
Excerpt: When DVD came out, it made VHS go crying to it's momma and you didn't think things could get much better. But of course technology is always evolving and now Hi-Def is that latest phase of eventually beaming things directly into our brains. Now I'm sure you've all seen something about the format war for Hi-Def DVD. In one corner you had the HD-DVD, in the other you had Sony's Blu-Ray.
Pros: Good Upscaling DVD player, HD Titles are now rock bottom price
Excerpt: I bought this player a few weeks ago and it's the first time since buying my 1080p TV that I have seen a HD picture and man, was I impressed! Out of the box its easy to set up, power cord and a HDMI cable and you're off. There is an option to plug in an ethernet cable, I'll get to that later, and there is also an optical output and audio L&R option for your amplifier or receiver.
Pros: Excellent pic & sound, easy set up . Great price compared to funny money Blu - ray
Summary: Like all HD players the load times are still a little long, however once up and running I find this unit faultless. Watching PiP Bluescreen commentary on 300 is just fantastic. At it's current price point it's worth it just for an upscaller, add to the mix the quality HD-DVD aspects and it pretty much unbeatable.
Excerpt: I purchased this player in november and have had no problems with it. With the recent price drops to as low as £120 its great value, as you get two titles in the box, 300 and The Bourne Supremacy. If you purchase the player before the end of January 2008 you can send away for 5 free titles out of a choice of 13 titles. Which means you get a high quality HD HVD and excellent SD disk upscaler for a really good price.
Pros: Low cost, great value reliable player great upscaling capabilities
Cons: limited choice of audio outputs if you have an AV receiver
Summary: This is a competent player (though nothing warms me to it, it is just a box). The loading, deloading and open tray delays are really tedious, but I understand standard for HD. What I found SO annoying, that I nearly threw the thing out on the first day, is that there are few circumstances where you can resume play from where you stopped, mid movie. And that becomes zero circumstances after you've put the machine on standby.
