Summary: I purchased this unit on January 22, 2008. Worked well for a year and I was happy with this player. On January 20, 2009 the remote no longer worked even after changing batteries several times. There is no way to play movies without the remote. I contacted Toshiba on January 25 about the remote not working. Not only was I told it was out of warranty (by a few days) but I would have to pay for a replacement remote.
Summary: I have returned the Toshiba HD-A20 DVD player. I purchased this for my husband for Christmas, and had no clue that the high definitions were obsolete. Movies are coming out in Blu-Ray, but this product does not play Blu-Ray movies. Blu-Ray players will play movies in high definition, but movies are not being produced in "high definition".
Summary: Toshiba HD-A3 720p/1080i HD DVD Player Not only was shipping delayed but the item was not packed properly. So when the item was left by Federal Express driver, there was obvious water damage and the shipping carton was mutilated. Irresponsibly, the Federal Express drive did everything he could to avoid my son. we returned the player immediately without using. This was simply a bad transaction. I will not buy electronics from a third party merchant again.
Summary: Do not buy as Blu-Ray is now the high definition DVD standard. The Toshiba HD DVD technology has been discontinued, as has most future production of HD DVD discs. If you buy this product, you are buying obsolete technology which will only be good for upconverting standard DVDs and playing the existing library of HD DVDs.
Standard DVD ok- Intolerable HD DVD performance. Substandard.

Summary: I eagerly awaited the arrival of my Toshiba A3 for Christmas. I coordinated the arrival by also renting 3 HD DVD's to watch from Netflix. Installation was a breeze by connecting this to my Sony Grand Wega HD Televison. First impression was that after it booted up, (says Welcome) and I hit the open drawer button it took over 45 seconds to open the drawer. I then inserted the .iso image for the firmware upgrade to the player.

Summary: One month after purchase, this unit still does not function on regular or HD discs! Toshiba should automatically provide necessary updates for purchasers as soon as the updates are completed without the owner's request! I notified Toshiba by USPS and email that I lived in an area without broadband computer coverage and required that updates be mailed to me and that my unit would not operate three weeks ago!
Summary: This is the second one I have had that did not play I have purchased this product september first, Toshiba is sending is sending another. I cant tell you if the picture quality is good it hasnt worked long enough. I tried the firmware updates that was no help. Toshiba said there is a part broken on the player and they will replace it but it will take another 7-10 business days. So hopefully by November I can watch have a functional player.
Summary: 08-27-2007 - Update - No change in the multitude of problems; firmware upgrades abound from Toshiba; just about every new movie I have tried to watch on this unit requires a firmware upgrade ... and that's the truth; latest new movie that requires an upgrade is 'Hot Fuzz'; granted not a great movie, but if you want to watch HD DVD don't waste money or this unit, or be prepared for frustrations and poor quality.
Cons: - I have to unplug the unit after I finish watch a movie before I can watch another movie. - Do not cut box for UPC Code - Sluggish power up - Sluggish power down - Sluggish load of movies
