Review Summary

The Toshiba HD-A2 DVD player is the latest unit in Toshiba's second generation of HD DVD players. The design of the HD-A2 is an upgrade over the bulky HD-A1. The HD-A2 has a comparatively slim-line chassis, measuring about 2.5 inches high, 17 inches wide, and 13.5 inches deep, a full inch and a half shorter than the A1. The front panel is glossy black and sloped forward, which makes it look unique. To the far left is the Power button, illuminated by a blue light when it's on and a red light when it's off. To the far right is the LED display, which, can be dimmed or even shut off. The bottom-third of the player contains a flip-down panel; below are some additional front-panel controls such as Play, Stop, and chapter forward/backward buttons. Under the flip-down panel are some front-panel controls and the “extension ports.” Toshiba has also redesigned the accompanying remote control, featuring keys which glow in the dark and is far more user friendly. The HD DVD performance of this unit is excellent. The HD-A2 delivers superb image quality in 1080i mode. As well as delivering a sharper, more detailed picture, the HD-A2 also offers superior audio performance. The player provides onboard decoding for Dolby Digital Plus and Dolby True HD. HD DVD discs also offer greater interactivity than standard DVDs. It is possible for example, to access menu functions such as director's commentary while the DVD is playing without having to navigate to the menu. As well as playing HD DVDs, the HD-A2 does a solid job at up-converting standard DVDs to the higher resolution so you can enjoy your existing DVD library with improved image quality. Toshiba HD-A2 offers excellent value for a HD DVD player capable of delivering excellent picture and audio performance. Definitely a good buy.
