great media burning

Peter d., Newegg
22 April 2009
  • Summary: The 10 year old VCR finally stopped working and that was an opportunity to upgrade in a major way. Do not lose the manual.
  • Pros: Copy to VHS, DVD RW, DVD R, dvd/vcr dubbing, etc. I have a video capture set up on my pc, but this is much easier. The DVDs will play on the pc and on recent additional dvd players. Get a 25 DVD RW spindle and you can copy and playback just about any way you want. The playback is great quality an...
  • Cons: No real cons, just a few things to look out for. The RCA A/V cables that come with it must be used to see the setup screens on the tv and for DVD RW and vhs play back. An HDMI cable can be used for stamped DVDs. No HDMI cable is provided so get that when you get a bunch of DVD RWs. Change the rec...

About as good as it gets for the price!

James S., Newegg
16 April 2009
  • Summary: Probably as good as any in this price range, maybe better...doesnt have any USB nor memory ports like the Panasonic DVD's...but plays mp3's and wma's as well as music CD's.
  • Pros: HDMI output for great playback of DVD's to a HDTV widescreen 16:9 aspect ratio. Great HD QAM Tuner and a good analog tuner. (for cable and over the air TV)VCR to DVD dubbing and DVD to VCR dubbing, if needed. Good for DVD-RW for editing titles, dont use DVD+R or DVD+RW for editing, wont work. Nic...
  • Cons: HTMI upscaling does not work playing the VCR... All DVD recorders have a much higher learning curve than a VCR... A side note about the QAM tuner. This is great for non encrypted cable or Satilitte TV and to Bypass the HD cable box, you can sometimes pick up encrypted channels...weird...

It records

James S., Newegg
6 April 2009
  • Summary: Have not recorded to VHS yet, but i see no problems if needed. The unit is heavier than i thought, seems well built. Has the same basic setup screen as my old magnavox, must be made by same chinese company.
  • Pros: Can dub back and forth. Digital Tuner. Has a remote... Record a decent Picture at 8hour length (DVD) I use - DVD/RW ...
  • Cons: Clunkey controls, wide screen is not filling my wide screen TV screen, yet it displays the right aspect ratio, just smaller...temprermental. Ruined a +DVR ...

It works

Charles N., Newegg
3 April 2009
  • Summary: An added bonus I hadn't considered is converting my current digital camcorder files to dvd. It works much better than converting avi files and burning dvd's on the computer.
  • Pros: Does what it says for a sales price below other units. Used it to convert vhs tapes to dvd. Copy protected vhs tape made poor quality, darkened copy. Digital tuner worked well, but that's not what I bought it for. Made one recording off the tuner to make sure it worked.
  • Cons: Manual seems poorly organized, but maybe that's because it can do so many things. Hadn't considered the problem with older copy protected tapes. I'm not sure if all my commercial tapes will be a problems yet.

Very Weak UHF reception

Eldred T., Newegg
19 March 2009
  • Pros: Everything works well as advertised.
  • Cons: DO NOT BUY for anywhere but ideal reception area, UHF part of tuner weaker than my DTV and Panasonic Digital DVDR. Serious as it cannot pick up time setting signal, and the most important for me Channel 13.1 in NYC, and some other UHF channels, as future Digital Television will be broadcast on. S...

User Review

Timothy S., Newegg
4 March 2009
  • Pros: Easy to program and setup. VCR to DVD dubbing is easy to use.
  • Cons: Once you setup the dvd to record a show, you can't play regular dvd's in the meantime unless you cancel the recording.

Good Enough

Robert S., Newegg
2 March 2009
  • Summary: Got me away from TiVo, which I never really used anyway, I just hope the VCR portion lasts longer than a few weeks, the last two VCR units I bought were pretty much pure junk, hopefully my luck will change with this one.
  • Pros: Easy setup, HDTV tuner built in, records to VHS/DVD and DVD to VHS. Accepts large assortment of DVD types, but not dual layer, and no HD-DVD or Bluray playback, which is fine since I already have a PS3.
  • Cons: Extremely slow when entering commands on remote. Used the VHS portion for test recordings, within 6 hours has developed an annoying squeaking noise that repeats every 3-4 seconds, for the duration of recording or playback. I hope it is the VHS tape and not the player....

Missing Feature

Anonymous, Newegg
28 February 2009
  • Summary: I don't see that this unit offers digital audio output. The specs here and on Toshiba's website do not mention this feature. If you need this feature, you may need to look for another unit.
  • Pros: This is just a comment. Please read other thoughts.
  • Cons: Same as above.
