Summary: I understand that this unit is no longer available. And for good reason. Consumer electronics Darwinism at work. It is slow, difficult to operate and repeatedly FAILS to transfer VHS tapes to DVD which is the reason I purchased this unit in the first place. While attempting to dub a VHS tape to DVD I keep getting (after 8 minutes into the dub) the message that the transfer failed because what I'm dubbing is a copywrited commercial release (it most certainly is NOT.
Summary: The recorder arrived very quickly. Everything looked to be in order and worked great the first time I used it. then I got busy and didn't use it again until after the warranty and return period expired. You guessed it. A tape is stuck and will not come out of the VCR and the DVR no longer records. It was a very expensive purchase for just one use. Now it is in the trash pile. Let the buyer beware on this machine.
Summary: I really feel like I wasted my money. The unit stopped being able to record from the TV after about 10 months - when I noticed it was too late to claim on the warranty. What a waste of money at a time when no one needs to be wasting money. A great disappointment of a purchase. I am sick every time I think about it. Still, I can continue to dub VHS tapes to DVD, but I am quickly running out of old VHS tapes to copy. Now what?
Summary: I bought this unit to preserve old vhs taped memories onto dvd. The First one turned out great and I can't wait to transfer all of my home movies to dvd. I'm still learning all of the functions, so if a slow motion reverse is available I haven't found it yet. That would help with the editing. I am having a lot of fun learning all of the functions this unit has (and there are plenty).
Pros: Attractive Design, Fast Recording, Fast Setup, Many features, Simple Controls
Summary: I bought this unit with the intention of dubbing some of my VHS and Hi-8 tapes to DVD and have never reliably able to do it with the D-VR600. I think I have wasted a couple dozen DVDs and only successfully dubbed anything several times. I get the cryptic, undocumented message "Can't record. TV system of input video has changed." When I emailed Toshiba for an explanation I received none, but instead was told to unplug the unit for about a minute so the system could reset.
Summary: This product is great for being able to view AND record on video or dvd and serves the purpose for which I bought it - to accompany my new 37" Toshiba Flat screen for movie viewing, and also to record shows that I might not have time to watch in real-time for later viewing. The only thing that is a little frustrating is that the response time from remote to machine is delayed. Also - even if you push the buttons on the unit itself, it doesn't respond quickly.
Summary: the software for this machine is poorly designed. The user guide is disorganized and probably written by a person whose primary language is not English; and worst of all the recording feature did not work. I gave it to a neighbor who has too much free time in order to avoid the inconvenience of taking it to the land fill.
