The Toshiba DR-5 is a Multi-Drive Recorder that will record and play back video using DVD-RW, DVD-RAM, and DVD-R formats. It gives great picture especially when used with HDMI. It can also use tuner to view TV image live; allows for PIP on TVs with limited inputs/PIP possibilities. It has progressive scan technology, too, and it will play AVI files, HDMI capable, and up-conversion. The Toshiba DR-5 is easy set up with HDMI, tuner, it is reliable and high quality recording. However the manual is inadequate and extremely complicated to understand; looks like it has been done for high tech people but the remote navigation is relatively easy to learn. The power up, and loading process seem to take a long timer, and the response to the remote seems slow. This is the only complaint from most users; it's that the Toshiba DR-5 takes quite awhile to load the DVD after having inserted it in the tray. Above all the D-R5, once set up, works perfectly. But to finalise with the manual requires too many steps and the on screen menus could be more intuitive. There is no source button. To start is to press the Input button and then choose your input from a display provided. D-R5 does not work with universal remotes. Interfaces are bad. When connecting the player via HDMI, one must first connect standard RCA-type video out in order to see menus and then switch to HDMI. There is no input/output quick switch. On the other hand its upgrade features are at reasonable prices. One user commented that he is quite satisfied with this product and that; one cannot not find any other brand with these features in this price range. But sometimes the time it takes to load one may think it isn't working. It also takes time to shut down.
