Summary: I use the VCR/DVD combo for playback only. Hopefully I'll be able to transfer some VCR taped to DVD. I purchased this unit to be able to use the Sony Bravia Sync feature in order to eliminate the extra remote. I have been unable to make the unit Sync even after setting up the menus with a Sony Tech. The unit so far has performed flawlessly and has removed background noise that was on some of my VCR tapes played on the replaced unit.
Summary: It takes a period of trial and error to get the desired results. It is not always clear in the instruction manuel how to record for proper playback. I first recorded DVD's on DVD-R which will play back on this machine but will not play back on other DVD players, but if you record on DVD-RW then they will playback on any machine...you need to record at Video Mode to playback on other machines. The quality of the recordings is excellent.
Summary: Mainly to transfer video from camera to DVD. Graphic bars appear at the top and bottom of the tv screen when the camera is connected via DV input. You can't make them go away, and it's very distracting. Called Sony CS and they were clueless (hard to communicate with also due to english language). Also, the remote was very finnicky. Some controls would not work at all. I tried different angles , made sure there was no interference etc.
Pros: Attractive Design, Fast Setup
Cons: Discs Load Slowly, Finnicky remote, Info screen always on
Summary: Remote control with this product didn't work for the Timewarner Cable Box for top set box use. Remote controls from Timewarner cable box and SONY's own Bravia TV couldn't be programmed. SONY says this product uses different infrared frequency thus doesn't work. I think it is BS. SONY recommends a remote control with learning.
Cons: Expected better from SONY, Remote control from other
