Excerpt: I have been using a Sony RDR-HXD890 for two months or so. Whilst the manual made the set-up seem complicated, in practice it was straightforward for my purposes (an aerial to the digital tuner, a sat receiver to the SCART, and an HDMI connection to the TV). Since receiving the unit, I have used it every day, for recording, playback, listening to mp3s and watching DVDs.
Excerpt: I bought this to replace an LG DVD recorder which had gone wrong for the second time. The Sony RDR HXD890 is recommended best buy by Which, Home Cinema and others. It is well finished and quite heavy. From the moment I turned it on it was simple to set up and after acquiring the digital TV channels reading the instruction book I set up the HDMI output for the TV from the menus in only a few minutes.
Excerpt: Great DVD HDD recorder, easy to use and absolutely crammed with features. It does take a little while to get your head around all the different functions, but to me this has to be expected due to the fact that this machine can do so much. I found that I didnt need to even look at the instructions as everything is self explanatory on the controls and various menus.
Excerpt: Really it is very hard to find fault with this product. As a minor niggle the EPG doesnt display channel number, but how trivial is that if it gives the full name? Given that it is a single tuner machine it will do all reasonable combinations of more than one thing at a time, e.g. record while playing back. One it wont do is dub from HDD to DVD while recording something else, but this is hardly a big issue.
Excerpt: Ive had this for about a month now, and I am still amazed at the quality of picture it produces from DVDs through the HDMI cable with upscaling. The remote is well designed, and theres a lot which can be done with one touch or a very few button presses. Ive also recorded from some of my wifes NTSC video tapes and that was easier than I had expected.
Excerpt: Im thrilled to bits with this great machine! It was bought as a replacement for our ageing Panasonic VCR, which had started chewing up tapes and becoming less than reliable. I was expecting problems setting up after reading reviews here. Dont people read these manuals before trying to set up equipment? Yes, it is a lengthy manual but this machine is complex & capable of a great deal more than a simple VCR.
Excerpt: This is an easy recorder to use and has changed our viewing habits. 1 - so easy to set up to record single or series. 2 - now often watch a program 10- 15 min after the start and skip th ads 3 - easy and quick to put HDD recording onto DVD. 4 - good picture quality on Sony 32v4000 tv (non hd). many features still not used - picture playback/camcorder ect.
Excerpt: Bought this as a replacement for an old DVD player & to replace an ancient VHS-recorder. Since it also had Freeview it gave us more flexiblity when used with our digital TV. We have now lived with the product for 2 months & have had no problems at all with it. Excellent picture playback quality & easy to use after a little practice.
Excerpt: Did exactly what it said on the tin. What was additionally pleasing was that this recorder was able to channel switch our satellite sky box (made by Grundig)via an infra red gadget included, so that recording from the sky box just involves setting the guide plus on the recorder and then leaving the sky box switched on. At the appropriate time the sky box is switched over to the correct channel and its output recorded through the scart lead.
