Excerpt: Really it is very hard to find fault with this product. As a minor niggle the EPG doesnt display channel number, but how trivial is that if it gives the full name? Given that it is a single tuner machine it will do all reasonable combinations of more than one thing at a time, e.g. record while playing back. One it wont do is dub from HDD to DVD while recording something else, but this is hardly a big issue.
Excerpt: The recorder is brilliant when set up, and easy to use. The only down side is not being able to change channel through the recorder when a programme is being recorded. The set up however was very frustrating. The manual gives different senarios for hardwiring the TV, Skybox, etc but is very confusing and even when followed to the letter is wrong. Online wiring help gave a different method of wiring when all the components of my system were entered. Again did not work!
Excerpt: Very nice unit. Simplicity itself to set up and use. Have being doing extensive series recordings and it hasnt let me down yet! Would have no hesitation in recommending this unit to anyone. Playback of DVDs is very good and standard quality recordings are more than adequate for the purpose.
Excerpt: This is an easy recorder to use and has changed our viewing habits. 1 - so easy to set up to record single or series. 2 - now often watch a program 10- 15 min after the start and skip th ads 3 - easy and quick to put HDD recording onto DVD. 4 - good picture quality on Sony 32v4000 tv (non hd). many features still not used - picture playback/camcorder ect.
Excerpt: Ive had this for about a month now, and I am still amazed at the quality of picture it produces from DVDs through the HDMI cable with upscaling. The remote is well designed, and theres a lot which can be done with one touch or a very few button presses. Ive also recorded from some of my wifes NTSC video tapes and that was easier than I had expected.
Excerpt: Very disappointed. I bought this partly to be able to play avi/divX files from my external hard drive. The unit will only support jpeg and mp3 playback through the usb port. I think this is Sony policy as my Sony Bravia TV with USB port does exactly the same, presumably an anti-pirate feature. Unfortunately, if you have home videos on your external HDD, you cannot play them without burning to DVD first.
Excerpt: Sony RDR-HXD890 Freeview+ 160GB Hard Disc Drive DVD Recorder - Silver Be Warned. If you want to link to an anologue telly, you cannot record one digi program and watch another digi program without buying a second digi box. Then set aside at least two days to read the appaling instruction book.
Excerpt: Im thrilled to bits with this great machine! It was bought as a replacement for our ageing Panasonic VCR, which had started chewing up tapes and becoming less than reliable. I was expecting problems setting up after reading reviews here. Dont people read these manuals before trying to set up equipment? Yes, it is a lengthy manual but this machine is complex & capable of a great deal more than a simple VCR.
Excerpt: Great DVD HDD recorder, easy to use and absolutely crammed with features. It does take a little while to get your head around all the different functions, but to me this has to be expected due to the fact that this machine can do so much. I found that I didnt need to even look at the instructions as everything is self explanatory on the controls and various menus.
Excerpt: I did a bit of research before buying this item and what swung it for me was the DVI input on the front of the unit. I wanted to put all my dv tapes onto DVD with ease. This was achieved with a few presses of the remote control. I read a few adverse comments about the remote before buying this item but after one days use I just about mastered it and find it quite easy to use now.
