Excerpt: If you are a video technology wizard then this review is not for you because I have no idea about all the more advanced features. If you are an ordinary human being who just wants something simple to record programs so that you can watch them later then read on... With my last recorder (VCR with tapes) I often missed programs. I mean I KNOW I set the video and I thought I did it carefully but I guess I made a mistake somewhere and it recorded the wrong thing.
Pros: Easy to use . Recordings automatically start at the right time .
Cons: Can't watch one channel and record another .
Excerpt: I have been using a Sony RDR-HXD890 for two months or so. Whilst the manual made the set-up seem complicated, in practice it was straightforward for my purposes (an aerial to the digital tuner, a sat receiver to the SCART, and an HDMI connection to the TV). Since receiving the unit, I have used it every day, for recording, playback, listening to mp3s and watching DVDs.
Excerpt: I know this to be an excellent machine, if you do not have sky plus or BT vision which are very similar. However, I ordered this product before Christmas for Christmas. I tracked it to the distribution depot in Leeds, from where it disappeared. It would have been possible for am azon to send another by special_D to arrive in time, but they declined to do so,but they did refund me without difficulty.
Excerpt: I bought this to replace an LG DVD recorder which had gone wrong for the second time. The Sony RDR HXD890 is recommended best buy by Which, Home Cinema and others. It is well finished and quite heavy. From the moment I turned it on it was simple to set up and after acquiring the digital TV channels reading the instruction book I set up the HDMI output for the TV from the menus in only a few minutes.
Excerpt: I have just received this product, very good apart from the instructions. I set up the machine exactly how it showed in the manual (to receive digital and analogue) and I could not get to tv to recognise it. What it doesnt show on the diagram is that you also need to connect it up with a scart lead to the tv. Other than that its very good and looks nice and smart.
Excerpt: I have had this sony rdr - hxd 890 for about a week and still cant get the guide + system to work. The instructions may as well be written in greek. I recently sent back 2 Panasonics that were faulty but at least their set ups worked a dream. With this you cant work out if its faulty or whether i have just wired it incorrectly and to make matters worse it tells you that it can take up to 24 hrs to down load channels !!!
Excerpt: Great DVD HDD recorder, easy to use and absolutely crammed with features. It does take a little while to get your head around all the different functions, but to me this has to be expected due to the fact that this machine can do so much. I found that I didnt need to even look at the instructions as everything is self explanatory on the controls and various menus.
Excerpt: Really it is very hard to find fault with this product. As a minor niggle the EPG doesnt display channel number, but how trivial is that if it gives the full name? Given that it is a single tuner machine it will do all reasonable combinations of more than one thing at a time, e.g. record while playing back. One it wont do is dub from HDD to DVD while recording something else, but this is hardly a big issue.
