Summary: If it wasn't for the firmware I would give this DVD player a 8 or 9 out of 10. The picture quality on my Samsung LE32R41BD is fantastic but in everyday use the player is badly let down by a couple of things that could have so easily been avoided. As mentioned in an earlier review the RW/FF scan speeds of 2x, 4x, 8x and 64x are nothing short of useless, 2, 4, 8x are too slow and 64x is too fast. The only speeds I ever use on my Sky+ (and older DVD) are 16 and 32x.
Pros: Picture quality on 32" LCD via HDMI
Cons: RW/FF scan speeds of 2x, 4x, 8x and 64x and no 'Auto resume' very annoying
Excerpt: I have now had this DVD player since christmas, i thought i might as well buy one as i was also getting one of the HDTV's also from Samsung. The advantages of this DVD player are as follows: 1. When the DVD player has been connected to a HDTV and a DVD is being played there is a very small increase in the quality of the picture on the screen, but the price at which this DVD player is selling, i had expected there to be a big improvement in picture quality. 2.
Summary: Good price, but the fast forward/reverse scanning features are really very, very poor. Samsung appear to know this as they've provided a set of 'jump forward and back 10 seconds' type buttons which quite frankly you will use repeatedy over and over instead of the usual high-speed scan functions.
Pros: Good price and compatibility (includes an HDMI cable for free in some countries)
Cons: Rubbish search speeds that increment at 2x,4x, 8x and 64x and all except 2x don't actually show anything like the video at the point the time marker displays
Excerpt: As I mentioned in my previous review of my Samsung 32 " LCD TV I also attained this DVD player at the same time. Here is my impression of this DVD player however be warned like my LCD TV review I will not be explaining every technical detail this TV has to offer rather I'll be looking at how it works on a day to day basis. *** Appearance *** This DVD player does appear sleek if a little wide. It is thin in height. It is a grey, metallic colour.
Pros: Improves picture quality, reasonable price
Cons: Quite big, will probably be replaced by better models in the future
Excerpt: The DVD -HD850 is designed for users who want to maximise their HD displays with their existing DVD collections, it employs a digital process that upgrades the standard DVD resolution to high-definition resolution with 1080i, 720p, and 768p signals. Quality of conversion is high and relatively easy to do, infact, took just minutes. The latest scaling up technology is applied to raise the video resolution of the regular DVD titles(576i/p) to HD quality (720px/1080i).
