Audio Sync is awful

Michael C., Newegg
24 November 2008
  • Summary: Spoke with Samsung Technical Support a few separate times, and they always suggested a hard reset (by pressing down both channel keys at the same time) and then letting the unit rest for 30+ minutes between each burn.
  • Pros: Very easy to set up right out of the box - within minutes I was able to record direct from my DVR to the DVD-recorder, with excellent quality.
  • Cons: Audio sync problems render this unit absolutely useless for my needs. I tried a plethora of different videos and different brands of DVD-R's, but at the end of the day, the sound was always a second or two off with the video - inordinately frustrating if you're intending to use this type of unit ...

Audio Sync Problems

Mike S., Newegg
18 November 2008
  • Pros: Everything seemed pretty well done except the show stopper described below.
  • Cons: As reported elsewhere, the audio did not sync with the video. There was a time lag of a couple of seconds. Tried two different units. Newegg was great, no probs with the returns, RMA was quick and easy.

Excellent Product

roarlions1, PriceGrabber
4 November 2008
  • Summary: I would highly recommend this recorder. It was very easy to set up, makes excellent copies, and has a number of input/output options. It doesn't have an S-Video input, but the picture quality on HQ record mode seems to be quite good anyway.
  • Pros: Easy setup, great menu navigation, numerous recording options
  • Cons: Hard to label chapters, slight delay with record feature, no S-Video input

very happy with this unit

Jamie I., Newegg
16 October 2008
  • Pros: Unit is user friendly and higher quality than the previous unit that I owned (Phillips) that was junky. Good transfer quality from VHS to dvd. Easy to use feature is one button record mode. pop in tape and blank dvd and push this button and the machine will cue the tape and begin recording.
  • Cons: None really.

I am rescinding my previous four egg review.

Anthony A., Newegg
15 October 2008
  • Summary: Samsung tech support was chuckling when I explained the problem. I, apparently, am not the only customer whom has complained.
  • Pros: Yes this machine has all of the pros and cons that I listed earlier but something has come up that prospective buyers must be aware.
  • Cons: The new copy protection this unit uses will not allow ANY recording of broadcast movies regardless of age! I tried to record a 60 yr old film last night and video didn't record. I have since attempted to record multiple premium stations, for which I pay, with the same result. I purchased this uni...

Audio Out Of Sync!

Charlotte H., Newegg
9 October 2008
  • Pros: Plays DVDs and VHS tapes as advertised and recording through the inputs works ok. Good price point. Component/HDMI/RCA outs, DVD upconversion.
  • Cons: If you go to copy any VHS tape to DVD, you will end up with a coaster. Every single VHS to DVD I tried, the audio is out of sync anywhere from one to three seconds. Nobody wants to watch a home DVD where their lips move and two seconds later words come out. I tried six different home videos and f...

Good performance & many features

Anthony A., Newegg
8 October 2008
  • Summary: All electronics have petty annoyances. The pros of this recorder definitely outweigh the cons.
  • Pros: The VR357 was a replacement for a refurbished VR330 (bought online elsewhere). The 330 began having issues shortly after purchase and gave up the ghost before the replacement warranty ran out. The VR357 has many features lacking in the previous model. The menus are easy to understand, it will upg...
  • Cons: The VR357 requires 30% of a DVD be recorded before it will finalize in EZ record. This is annoying as I want to transfer programs to my PC and/or laptop for independent viewing via disc. So I must record more hours before I can perform the transfer. It does not have a coaxial cable connections fo...

User Review

Terry B., Newegg
30 September 2008
  • Summary: I did purchase the extended warranty since I am leary of multi-function items, i.e., VHS and DVD in one package.
  • Pros: Praise only for this unit. It was used heavily to transfer many home VHS tapes to DVD and never failed to anticipate my needs such as stopping recording when tape ended. Has played and recorded on any DVD I've had on hand without complaint.
  • Cons: Have to leave this blank. No problems

Will not back up original tapes

Douglas H., Newegg
18 September 2008
  • Summary: The copying of pre-recorded material for backup purposes is 100% legal. Otherwise, the manufacturer would have the responsibility of replacing the VHS tapes when they no longer played properly. Samsung should be open about their product not copying most VHS tapes.
  • Pros: It plays DVD's.
  • Cons: Will NOT copy VHS tapes of prerecorded material. I have lots of movies on VHS tape that I want to backup on DVD and store the tape. Most of the content on the tapes is not available to buy on DVD. This recorder will not perform at what I want it to do 95% of the time. An utter failure.

Great Product

Scott J., Newegg
9 September 2008
  • Summary: I do not really remember where I bought this product and had finally just about given up hope of finding a DVD recorder that recorded Closed Captions [CC] and bought this about 6 months ago.
  • Pros: It records closed captions!
  • Cons: It feels cheap
