The Samsung DVD-VR357 DVD Recorder/VCR Combo is a useful recording device and DVD up-converting player capable of tackling non-HD formats. This device is specifically made to be used with a cable or satellite system, and only has the ability to command a cable box to a station; it has no tuner of its own. Samsung DVD-VR357 features Full Multi-Format Play & Record that supports any format DVD Disc RAM/-R/-RW/+R/+RW. Thus Samsung DVD-VR357 DVD Recorder/ VCR Combo is like a general purpose recording center for use with a cable converter box. No more, and no less. Samsung DVD-VR357 is simple to set up and upconverting up to 1080i allows for sharp and beautiful picture. It doesn’t have its own tuner; either you record from the cable box, or you record from a monitor output on the TV. It features both DVD recording and VCR recording, and has the ability to automatically record between the two. The unit up-converts its output to support HD monitors. The VR357 recorder has an easy to read display with colors easy on the eyes, such as green and red., the display indicator for DVD mode is on the top left of the display next to the DVD recorder tray. The red VCR active display is in the opposite corner, next to the VCR tape slot, so while you need to be within a couple of feet to read the letters DVD or VCR. The recorder uses a menu system to set up recordings which, along with selecting a recording device, a recording channel, and the date and time, also lets you select from a wide range of recording resolutions, or can select automatically. But extensive recording times on DVDs have degraded image. This Compact multi-function player is quite satisfactory for general use recording with flexible output options.

When DVD says to use the remote and I click on captions for the hearing impaired caption are still off. What must I do with the remote to get captions on some newer DVDs which do not have captions on/off like older ones. I have a Samsung DVD-VR 357 model. Is there an easier remote to get captions with ?

I have the DVD VR 357 from Samsung, and I am running everything through a surround sound system made by Sony (don't think that matters). I am connecting the DVD recorder directly to the television with an HDMI cable, but I want it to run through the surround sound, which doesn't have HDMI connections (yet, I'm looking into it). When I connect the DVD recorder to the TV, I get a blinking blue screen with a DVD in the player, and no audio. I've looked through the instruction book for the recorder and can't figure out the connections or the settings for the player to get it to work. Can someone tell me how to do this?
