More Features

The DVD player has a parental channel lock. It has a tabletop form factor and has a tray type DVD media load. It has Dolby Digital and DTS decoders as well. The audio output mode for Samsung’s BD-P1400 is a surround sound. The width of this unit is 12.8 inches and its height is 3.1 inches. Its depth is 12.8 inches too while its weight is 9.3 pounds.

Review Summary

The Samsung BD-P1400 is a capable Blu-ray player at a relatively affordable price. The BD-P1400 has the classic Samsung style. The front of the unit is all glossy black, with a thin strip of silver along the bottom. To the far left is the Power button surrounded by a blue light, which unfortunately can’t be turned off in the settings menu. To the far right is the LED display, which is a little small when viewed from a standard seating distance. The BD-P1400’s high-resolution soundtrack support is excellent. It has onboard decoding for Dolby Digital Plus, Dolby TrueHD, and DTS-HD High Resolution, which means it can output these soundtracks either in PCM format over the HDMI output or via the analog outputs. The BD-P1400 also offers output for high-resolution soundtracks. Connectivity is also good. There’s an HDMI output capable of carrying both 1080p video signals and high-resolution audio. For high-def analog video, there’s a component video output (limited to 1080i), and there’s an S-Video output and a composite output for standard-def output. On the audio side, there’s the HDMI output, along with 5.1-channel analog outputs, both optical and coaxial digital audio outputs, and stereo analog outputs. Rounding out the connectivity is an Ethernet port, which enables you to upgrade the firmware from the Internet, a feature common to HD DVD players, but very rare among Blu-ray players. This player gives excellent image quality on Blu-ray movies and has an outstanding soundtrack support. However the Samsung BD-P1400 has no memory feature. If a movie is stopped it will start from the beginning. This can be annoying if you pause the movies frequently for breaks. When you pause a movie it will only pause for about 5 minutes, then it will go to the screen saver. After that, the movie will start all over again. This is quite troublesome.

  2. Samsung BD-P1400 Blu-ray DVD Player - The Rest of the Story

    31 March 2008

Samsung set themselves apart from the Blu-ray pack last time around in our Secrets DVD Player Benchmark™ with the BD-P1200. While not the best Blu-ray player on the block, it did a commendable job with DVD playback thanks to the utilization of the new Silicon Optix Reon chip. We were really hoping that this would become the de facto standard with their upcoming players, but unfortunately that is just not the case. The new BD-P1400 does bring some compelling features t... 2. Which BR players can pass lossless audio through the Bitstream?

Panasonic BD30 - all codecs Samsung BDP1400 - all codecs Samsung BDP5000 - all codecs Sony S500(No DTS MA bitstream though). I think the LG does as well but someone will have to dig deeper on that one.

  3. About to go HD...

Thank you Jeff. I thought the 500 might be out because of the audio options. Am I misreading or does the 300 actually do more than the 500? That seems very misleading. How is the samsung BDP1400? I can't find much on it. It's pretty much the only other option so I might as well ask about it.
