Summary: I've had this machine for a few years now and couldn't be happier with it. Except: we just bought a new TV and upgraded our digital cable box to an HDTV box. The new box has only HDMI and component outputs, while the DVR does not have inputs for those cables--it only has coaxial cable and composite inputs. Apparently there are no adapters that will solve this problem, so I can no longer record to this unit.
Summary: I have been using this DVR for over two years now, and am still very pleased with it! The video quality in LP mode is quite good (recordings are about 1Gb/hour). Using the system is easy, in fact I've never had to open the manual. I keep several movies on the system, but generally burn recordings to DVD for archival. I've never been pleased with the naming menu. Although I doubt I could come up with something quicker, it seems a bit clumsy.
Summary: I LOVE my 640H!! I know Pioneer has had some issues with this unit but my unit has done an OUTSTANDING job!!! It is nice to be able to set this unit and walk away knowing that it is going to do its job.
My review after owning this DVD recorder for almost 2 years...

Summary: A great DVD recorder. I am an electronic junkie. Pioneer DVD 640 H was my first DVD hard drive recorder and so far it is flawless in recording my favorite soap operas and burning DVDS. My first DVD recorder was a Magnavox using a DVD disc to record my shows and I found that recording directly to a disc was quite unstable and sometimes it freezes in the recorder which really upsets me.
Summary: I have the international version that has a 250gb HD. The record quality is great. Burning from HDD to DVD is ultra fast. Editing is easy. Only complaint is that initial setup of international version was a bit of a pain because of the PAL default output and automatic channel setup was wrong and each channel had to be fixed manually.
Summary: Look, if you desire an EASY to use Tivo-esque recording device and don't have time to B-arbara S-treisand with the minutia regarding superior quality, TV Guides, input/output jacks, etc., then this is the perfect recorder for you. I bought this since I don't have a cable box, just cable TV and I travel. I record what I want when I am gone and then watch it when I return. It took 3 minutes to set up and start recording! It came with a thick manual but who has the time?
Summary: We purchased this DVR with 160 Gig hard drive in January and we absolutly LOVE IT! It is easy to program, and easy to watch from the DVR. I also burn to a DVD-R and watch it on another player. As long as I finalize my disc after burning it, then it will play in all our other players. My husband starts watching his shows about 20 minutes after they start and then he chases through the commericials and then gets done with the show around the regular time.
Summary: The Pioneer DVR-640H is EXTREMELY easy to use!!!!! I hardly had to refer to the instruction manual to record, set timer recording and watch the programs (until I try some more exotic copying or recording). The picture from the recorded program on the Hard Drive is actually better than the original on the TV. Recording to a DVD was easy too. I'm loving not having to constantly put in a new tape or DVD to record new programs.
Summary: This is an awesome dvd recorder with the hard drive dvr AND dvd recording sections. I can record & edit with the dvr and then group the recordings I want and put them on to a dvd at high speed copy. The only thing is that there is no digital optical jack for a digital optical audio out, which is usually an awesome thing to have when playing audio.
Summary: This is my first DVR purchase. Feel I made a wise decision. The unit performs very well. Very flexible with bitrates and quality is amazing. I burn many Dvd's on the computer, but this unit makes recording programs and burning them so much easier. Have been using it for 8 months now, burned countless Dvd's and it works flawlessly. Great thing about this unit is that it will record any off air program, never any copyguard issues.
