Review Summary

The Pioneer DV-400V-S (Silver) is a single-disc, mainstream DVD player. It is equipped with a progressive scanning feature, capable of delivering higher-quality video images to compatible televisions. Capable of playing multiple types of recordable and rewritable discs, this unit can handle more types of media that most DVD players. It also features JPEG playback, which allows viewing of digital photos (stored on a CD) on your television. However this player lacks DTS output capability, so it will not play back DTS soundtracks. It is ideal for watching movies and or listening to music. This DVD player has good features, with upconversion to 480p, 720p, 1080 I or 1080p. It can play DivX, Xvid and JPEG files, WMV, MP3 and WMA. You do not need to create a VCD disc structure, just copy the files to a CD-R/W disc or DVD and insert it into this player and it will play them. The same thing applies to the USB port that the player has so you can copy files onto a USB drive and the player will play them. The player supports slow and fast scan, even in DivX files. It has a coaxial digital audio out, HDMI out, component video out, S-Video and composite video out. Unlike so many recent DVD players, it has buttons on the front panel to control its menus, SUB/DVD switching and playback and has a very good remote control. The display is bright and informative. The onscreen displays are excellent and are very well designed; it displays at the same time the total time of the current chapter, remaining time and running time. One user was impressed with how convenient and informative the menus and onscreen displays are. And another impressive asset in this player is how Resume functionality is implemented. Considering its inexpensive price it is a good buy.

In short, this player is well equipped to be the workhorse of a very respectable home cinema system. As you can get a quality DVD player like this for £100, you may be reluctant to pay any more, unless you're planning on stepping up to a high definition disc player. Read more

Nice player for the money and the picture. We haven't used the flash drive, yet. We were looking for a cheap player with the S component, but we couldn't find one. So, we had to pay a little bit more. Pretty straightforward to play, and like the layoutof the remote. Far as sound quality, really haven't hook it up to speakers..... I was disappointed was the packaging. I had to order it from Circuit City, and the player was dropped off at my door in the original box. It... Read more

Since this was the number 2 rated DVD player in the 2008 CR Buying Guide, I thought I had nothing to lose. Wrong! The Standard definition picture is pretty bad; I knew that from the review. The 720p setting provides an extremely clear picture; I also knew that from the review. However, the disc tracking is absolutely horrible on this thing. A tiny smudge or scrape on a disc gives this player fits. Even discs that have no apparent defects won't play. I performned an ex... Read more

I bought this unit from Walmart Canada for $89.00. I was please with the HDMI, S-video and component cable outputs on such a low priced unit. The problem is with viewing images or videos from the USB port. When viewing JPEGs you cannot skip forward or backwards you have to use the slide show (very annoying) even though the manual says you should be able to use the fast forward or rewind keys to do so. Also if I play and MP3 at the same time as the slide show, it freez... Read more

"Bought a stunning 1080p big screen tv and decided to purchase an upconversion TV player until the whole Blu-Ray vs HD-DVD format war is settled. Shopped around online, reviewed all the upconversion DVD players and decided that the Pioneer had the best bang for the buck. Boy was I wrong! Setup and hookup is easy, as it's only one hdmi cable to either the receiver or TV. Easy enough right? Wrong. After hookup is where the problems start. After the initial setup, which ... Read more

I bought a Samsung 1080P loved the image, but was having troble with the unit. 1st on the tray got stuck all the time, 2nd unit the movies frozed, so decided to try Pioneer DV 400K. Image quality is terrible, you can see a lot of noise and spewcs. My regular non upconversion DVD did a better job. Will probably go back to Samsung 1080p7. Image is a lot superior Read more
