Summary: Have been using Philips DVD players for years due to their low cost, ease of rendering region-free (simple remote control code you can find at [@]) and their ability to convert PAL to NTSC.This is Philips' 'flagship' model and like the previous top model (the 5982), this possesses a USB port that allow you to watch video clips, JPEGs, etc.).
Pros: Attractive Design, Compact, Consistent Performance, Easy to make region-free, Easy To Set Up, Easy To Use, High Quality Picture, Plays back PAL on NTSC TV, USB 20 port
Summary: This is the second dvd player bought. I purshased as a christmas gift for my sister she never opened it until April. When my daughter tryied to turn it on it was dead wouldn't work. Thank god I purchased the warranty on it. She recieved it 2 weeks ago and it is working. I would recommened, if your thinking about getting this get the warranty. Also they don't tell you the warranty is only good 1 time, but they do you give you 10% on the new one.
Summary: I got my unit quickly and I have been enjoying it without any problems. The Philips DVP5990 plays every DVD/CD format I have tried and the picture and sound are great. My wife is from Bali, Indonesia and she has a lot of VCDs from home that most DVD players can't play but the Philips DVP5990 sails right through them. The remote was brand new!
Summary: The picture quality compared to my old DVD player was a definite improvement. The start up time is little slow. On some DVDs the background noise is too loud in compared to the spoken parts. I am sure there is a fix but I haven't figured it out yet.
Pros: Attractive Design, Compact, Easy To Set Up, Easy To Use
