Review Summary

The Philips DVP5960 HDM upscaling DVD player is an excellent choice for budget-conscious HDTV owners and multimedia lovers, and its DivX playback is a nice bonus. There is no other budget DVD player that offers more than the Philips DVP5960. This single-disc unit has an eye-catching design, with a sleek finish and slender construction, standing just 1-1/2 inches high. It is relatively inexpensive, and for its price the DVP5960 offers plenty of high-end features as well. The DVP5960 has an HDMI output for up-converting standard DVD to 576p, 720p or 1,080i playback. The picture is stunningly perfect if you have a compatible TV. Another great feature is its front-panel USB port, which enables you listen to music files from an MP3 player or view JPEG images from a digital camera. You can also use the USB port to stream DivX video to your TV. The design is nice with its reflective silver faceplate and the conveniently large LED display. There are several front-panel buttons, including standby, HD upscale (which toggles through resolutions), play/pause, and stop. Its overall performance is good but according to one user it doesn't quite live up to the expectations raised by the 's specifications; like for example, JPEG images displayed on the TV via the HDMI connection look stunning. Unfortunately, it takes 20 to 30 tedious seconds for an image to be completely revealed, as it slowly paints from top to bottom. This is ok for occasional use. But the DVP5960 will not a good choice if you want to create lots of digital slideshows. On the other hand the DVP5960 has no DTS support, no S-video output, and a poorly designed remote control which is somewhat frustrating to use, as it is without a backlight. But apart from this the performance of the DVP5960 is generally impressive, especially considering its price.
