Summary: I was debating between Sony and Phillips; Both had upconversion; I've had older models of both Sony and Phillips DVD players in the past. I chose to purchase this Phillips player (DVP3980/F7) because from my expereince Sony was too picky about DVD format. I didnt play many of my home-authored DVDs.
Summary: This DVD is worth the price and works ok. However, as a previous reviewer mentioned, the HDMI cable option will only work for a couple of months at best. I bought this DVD player two months ago, along with a new HD TV.
Summary: I got a new TV and got this DVD player at the same time it worked great for 5 months but now the DVD player only plays green & pink screens, works alright with the regular red, yellow, white cables but on HDMI it's just the funky colors..
Summary: This DVD plays EVERYTHING. My daughters have broken so many DVDs over the years and I have accepted the fact that I will have to buy one every year. My previous one was also a Philips DVD but an older model.
Summary: Bought this because my blu-ray decided to stop playing regular DVDs. Go figure. Rather than buy another expensive BD player, this fit the bill, and then some. It plays just about anything and the remote is ridiculously simple. It was also about $20 less than the big box store nearby. Nuff' said?
