Philips DVDR890- The cream of the crop

anthmack, Ciao
24 April 2004
  • Excerpt: "...the past 20 years. The Philips DVDR890 is just one of these new innovations, and as I have experienced, is one of the better ones on the market at the moment, reasonably priced to as low as £480. So why is it a good buy? *Features* When I first purchased the DVD recorder just after christmas in 2003, I realised that it was very simple to install. Once you had plugged in all of the input leads from your different appliances, (and obviously ...
  • Pros: Wide Range of Compatible formats, Good quality recordings, good size, value for money, easy set - up

Phillips the drawbacks

Ciaobaby2..., Ciao
8 February 2004
  • Excerpt: "The thing I found when I bought one pf these recorders last year in 2003 was, it was great at you had all the fun of being able to watch the recording in the exact same quality of what you recorded. You could hold a frame and it was perfect even on a 36'' television the quality was great. But then, when Phillips sent me an upgrade disc for the recorder, I put it in like the loyal servant I am, it never worked properly again! More than twenty times ...
  • Pros: This gadget has all the features you need, you'll love it until !
  • Cons: When you get an update C . D .  from phillips you'll be lucky if it ever works again !

A Mixed bag

Economist..., Ciao
1 September 2003
  • Excerpt: "...so much cheaper than when Philips first came out with a home consumer DVD Recorder (I paid about £350, if I remember correctly). I bought it to transfer my video collection onto DVD, since DVDs take up a lot less shelf space than do VHS tapes. However, be warned that in the EP+ record mode (which enables you to record roughly 6 hours), picture quality degrades quite a lot. I also don't like the front menu system, as if your video title is ...
  • Pros: The all - important record button; DVDR's take up less room than VHS tapes
  • Cons: Big & clunky; 'Extended Play' recordings can be quite low quality; some players will not play some DVDRs

Philips DVD Recordable - Right choice?

Niburu, Ciao
2 July 2003
  • Excerpt: "...digital ones. Like modern VCR’s, the Philips range include the usual VideoPlus, PDC, timer recording, One Touch Recording, on screen display etc. Again, like the newer VCR’s, you plug this one in to your current system (cables provided mind you!) and it sets itself up, tuning the channels, setting the clock and detecting what style television you have for normal/widescreen format. The difference here is that the programmes you record on to DVD are ...
  • Pros: Easy to manage, good quality recordings
  • Cons: Format issues (see below)

Meet My Mate Phil

whitedevi..., Ciao
23 June 2003
  • Excerpt: "...hours of information. Particularly with a Philips DVD Recorder you may worry about compatibility. With 3 varying recording formats in the market place it can be confusing. But the DVDR890 caters for just about everything: DVD+R, DVD-R, DVD-RW, video mode, DVD-Video, Super VCD, Video CD, Audio CD, CD-R, CD-RW Creating chapters was my next challenge which was overcome reasonably quickly - chapters are inserted in playback mode by selecting ...

DVD quailty recordings on a home recorder

alecshort, Ciao
30 September 2002
  • Excerpt: "...want to consider this, the Philips DVDR890 DVD recorder. Basically it combines all the quality and features normally associated with a DVD player with the ability of a normal VHS video recorder to record programmes off air except recording are made onto a blank DVD disk. A year ago the DVD recorders were launched onto the UK market, the problem was they cost £1000, now this 3rd generation Philips machine can be picked up ( if you shop around on ...
  • Pros: Higher quality recordings, easy to use .
  • Cons: None
