Summary: I bought this player about 15 months ago and I was very happy with the picture quality and features. But for the price I would have expected it to last longer than the $99 throw away units. I have other video components over 5 years old and still going strong. Wish I could find an HDMI player that works well and lasts too!
Summary: It was great while it worked during the warranty period. Too bad about 3 weeks afterward, it stopped playing DVD's. Think I'll spend another $250 on a "top of the line" DVD player from Panasonic? Oh no, I won't! If this had been a $50-$100 "throw-away" player, it wouldn't have been a big deal. Time to do some research on who knows how to make a quality DVD player.
Recent purchase, bugs fixed, ecellent player under $200

Summary: Bought this at J&R two months ago (on sale at $169) good player, even if only upconversion is only through the HDMI (and all my sets are DVI-D) and I had to hunt to find adapters that would be small enough to fit the space on the back of my tv's (Viewsonic and Panasonic). This thing outputs outstanding picture quality when you use the HDMI, and its very good at standard 480P through component. it is a bit complex in set up but really is worth the effort.
Freezes during playback. Unwatchable. Worthless player.

Summary: Works great for about 1 hour of playback. After that the video freezes and the player will not play anymore. I thought it was overheating so I ventilated it well and even applied dry ice to it with no luck. I upgraded to the latest firmware 3/15/06 and that just made the problem worse. It happens with all types of media, DVDs, DivX, etc. etc. This player is not even worth $.02.
Summary: I am very happy with the picture quality and sound quality of the DVD-S77S. I have used the player to watch movies and listen to CDs, and I feel it's a great product. The features are rich, and the connectivity choices are great. The player is easy to use, offers good value with high performance. Highly recommended.
Summary: This player has more bells and whistles than my desktop PC. If you want to customize your playback, this is the unit for you. I have mine hooked to the HDMI and haven't tried any other connection for comparison. Sleek unit, remote is OK. Only 3-4 movies played as of now, so I'm still dialing it in. I think all will work just fine in the end.
Summary: In a nutshell, this player does an outstanding job doing what you want it to. I just wanted to add, however, that I had the same U70-2 problem as cardinal pilot mentioned below. Tech support said it was a "Macro-Blocking" problem and sent me a firmware update CD. It did nothing. After "Googling" the U70-2 problem, came across Cardinal's fix and it works so far. Kind of annoying though when you pay $200+ when you can by bugless dvd players for $25.
Summary: I purchased mine in December 05 after carefully reading all the reviews here and a recommendation from Consumer Reports. The comments about the manual are spot-on but easily overcome. The only issue I have had are two failures coded on the display as U70-2, which, according to the manual, relate to the HDMI system. I am using a Panasonic HDMI 32" LCD.
Summary: After much research, I purchased the Panasonic S77S from J&R Music. J&R Music's price was right, delivery was prompt and the product was exactly what I ordered in a factory sealed box - I was impressed. I did not fool too much with the instruction manual for set up - I just went to the many reviews and took advantage of the experience of those before me. Set up was quick, picture on my Dell 37" LCD is fabulous. P.S.
