Conclusion: So by now you have figured that the Oppo DV-981HD sounds brilliant in theory. It has a ton of features, and is very well designed. But what good are all these features if they don't work properly? What if it chokes on deinterlacing? Is the upscaling much better than letting the TV do the work?

Excerpt: If you're a recent or even not-so-recent buyer of an HDTV, you know how tricky it can be to get standard definition content like DVDs to look good on a large screen. Sure, you can buy a Blu-ray Disc or HD-DVD player, and select from the few hundred films and concert videos available in glorious high definition. But what about the tens of thousands of titles available already on standard DVD?

Conclusion: About two years ago, the OPDV971H appeared on the market, and it quickly generated a loyal following thanks to excellent video performance, pocketbook-friendly price tag, and aggressive customer support. Even with the rapid pace of change over the last two years, the 971H remains a well-regarded player and is still available from OPPO Digital .
Excerpt: Conventional wisdom says that a consumer electronic product from a “brand name” will be superior to that from a small company, So you wouldn’t expect better video or premium features to be found on Oppo Digital’s DV-981HD DVD player – which retails for $229 USD and is sold over the Internet. But as we’ll see, (with a few noticeable exceptions as to design and menu navigation) when it comes to performance the DV-981HD is right there at the top.
Pros: Very high video quality; supports a ton of formats; lots of features
Cons: No component video ouput; poorly designed menus
Excerpt: The idea of a $229 USD source component causing normally staid and stolid reviewers to crawl over one another to be the first in line for a review sample may sound farfetched. thing you’ll notice about the DV-981HD's sound is that it is rather laid-back. It
draws you in, as opposed to thrusting the music at you. You’ll also note that it does
a wonderful job separating instrumental lines." "Another sonic aspect of the
inexpensive DV-981HD that will quickly catch your attention is its overall
resolution…. I was impressed that a player of the DV-981HD’s low cost could show
off the differences between formats to such an extent.

Conclusion: In evaluating a product like the DV-981HD, you have to look at it from a couple different angles. First of all, does it really turn your existing DVD library into something that will fully utilize your shiny new HDTV? Secondly, how does it work as a DVD player itself? The second question is an easy one to answer; it is possibly the best DVD player in its price range that exists on this planet. I can't say for sure of course, since I haven't tested every single other one.
Pros: Upscaling definitely improves DVD image quality, Excellent deinterlacing performance, 1080p output via HDMI, Comes with a high quality HDMI cable, Plays pretty much any material that comes on a CD or DVD, Front display can be dimmed or turned off, Can be set to Region Free, All this for about $230
Cons: Takes a long time to initially load a DVD, No Component video leaves SDTV owners even further behind, Disabling front display lights completely - the setting is not saved, Remote not backlit, Despite high res output, does not play high res DivX
