  • Conclusion: So by now you have figured that the Oppo DV-981HD sounds brilliant in theory. It has a ton of features, and is very well designed. But what good are all these features if they don't work properly? What if it chokes on deinterlacing? Is the upscaling much better than letting the TV do the work?

BigPictureBigSound

  • Excerpt: If you're a recent or even not-so-recent buyer of an HDTV, you know how tricky it can be to get standard definition content like DVDs to look good on a large screen. • Conclusion: About two years ago, the OPDV971H appeared on the market, and it quickly generated a loyal following thanks to excellent video performance, pocketbook-friendly price tag, and aggressive customer support. Even with the rapid pace of change over the last two years, the 971H remains a well-regarded player and is still available from OPPO Digital .

Oppo Digital DV-981HD DVD Player

SoundStage!

  • Excerpt: The idea of a $229 USD source component causing normally staid and stolid reviewers to crawl over one another to be the first in line for a review sample may sound farfetched. Usually, it takes something in the low five figures to get our juices flowing. But when we heard about Oppo Digital’s DV-981HD DVD player, stampede we did. I won.

Oppo Digital DV-981HD Universal Audio/Video Player

  • Summary: Sound "The first thing you’ll notice about the DV-981HD's sound is that it is rather laid-back. It draws you in, as opposed to thrusting the music at you. You’ll also note that it does a wonderful job separating instrumental lines." "Another sonic aspect of the inexpensive DV-981HD that will quickly catch your attention is its overall resolution…. Latest upconverting DVD player enhances playback, approaches HDTV quality

Consumer Electronics Net
22 December 2006
  • Excerpt: When we reviewed the Oppo DV-970 DVD universal player six months ago, we were highly impressed with the upconverting player, calling its 720p and 1080i output of standard definition DVDs the best we'd seen. Now Oppo has topped that, releasing its DV-981HD Universal DVD Player ($230) that upconverts standard DVDs to the coveted 1080p resolution as well as 720p and 1080i.
