The OPPO DV 980H DVD player provides excellent audio performance using a Dolby Digital Surround EX decoding. It gives high resolution slide show pictures and has a USB 2.0 interface for playback of pictures, music, and videos. It weighs 5.1 pounds, with a width of 16.9 inches, height of 1.9 inches and a depth of 10.5 inches. The DVD player is able to play DVD-Audio, DVD-Video, SACD, CD, HDCD, XviD, DivX, and many other formats. The picture HD quality and the sound surround audio are both of full clarity. Its connections, aside from HDMI also includes Composite, Component, 7.1 CH, 5.1 CH, S-Video, Stereo, Optical and Coaxial.
The OPPO DV-980H is the latest DVD in the company’s line-up of upconverting units. This model has positioned itself between its flagship DV-981HD and the DV-970HD. Its special features are a multichannel SACD and DVD-Audio over HDMI, a DivX/Xvid support and aspect-ratio control. With its excellent image quality, the OPPO DV-980H can upconvert SD DVDs to 1080p but it is not one of the high definition DVD players, Blu-ray or HD-DVD. It can also be made region-free with a simple hack. To make it easier for its users, the OPPO DV-980H offers a full range of options and you wouldn’t have any problems with the setup menus either as the manual explains them all. This model also provides a Control and Navigation wheel rather than the normal Play and Pause buttons. From the outside, the OPPO DV-980H has an attractive and understated black design. Some things that its users have taken a dislike in are the fact that it’s expensive compared to other DVD players and that similarly priced HD DVD players deliver vastly superior image quality on HD DVDs. The OPPO also cannot play either Blu-ray or HD-DVD discs. Aside from that, the OPPO DV-980H has the ability to flexibily playback kall sorts of CD and DVD formats like DivX, DVD-Audio, Super Audio CD (SACD), HDCD, WMA, and Kodak Picture CD. Unlike other manufacturers, the Oppo DV-980H provides you with a six foot HDMI cable when you purchase it. The fact that the Oppo DV-980H has a USB 2.0 port that accepts USB flash drives and card readers which is considered a great deal for photographers. It also supplied a Component video output along with HDMI. It is said that if you’re not ready to get a high-def player, the Oppo DV-980H DVD player delivers excellent performance and an unparalleled feature set for the price.

But it’s so hard to even countenance its removal from my audio system that I can’t even predict when it might happen, though when that time comes I’ll probably also compare it with the 970HD predecessor model…” Read more
OPPO ships a nifty DVD player offering high end features at a not-so-high end price. Video playback isn't perfect, but it's still pretty darned good. Read more
For music lovers seeking the finest sub-$200 player on the market, Oppo’s DV-980H is in a class by itself (unless or until a competitor builds something that can knock it off its throne). It’s also a great player for A/V enthusiasts who will appreciate the DV-980- H’s ability to make conventional DVDs look astonishingly good when upconverted to 720p, 1080i, or 1080p resolution levels. The visual effect, though not quite on a par with Blu-ray or HD DVD discs, is... Read more
"Dominate!" It's what you hear football teams yell before the game begins, and it's what Oppo Digital is doing in the budget segment of the A/V market. This California-based company seemingly stuffs every bell and whistle into its sleek CD/DVD/SACD players, including advanced audio and video options, and then charges a pittance for it all. The DV-981HD ($229 USD) was so well received that consumers and members of the press alike wondered how Oppo could follow up its... Read more

1. Let me be clear that I HATE MOVIES!!! The only way you'll get me into a movie theatre is if people's is buying or my date guarentees I'll get laid afterwards. I don't like movies because I don't like the idea of having some lowlife Hollywood "whatzit" forcing me to sit passively for two hours while he/she spurts their 'arte' on me. 2. If I hate going to movies, imagine my joy of staying home for two hours to watch re-runs DVDs) I already know the plot to... 3. So if... Read more
The Oppo's quality and attention to detail have been exhaustively written about in these reviews, so I won't go into that here. This review is for anyone that is wondering about the Oppo's upscaling capabilities vs. the PS3. First off, let me say that I absolutely LOVE my PS3; the Blu Ray performance is outstanding, the games are great, and it's a wonderfully designed and reliable piece of gear. But as much as I love it, I've always felt that the DVD playback has left a... Read more
i bought this unit because i have an older onkyo receiver with no HDMI, but it has 7.1 analog inputs, so i can decode hi-res audio on the Oppo and use the analog outs to send to the Onkyo (remember, digital s/pdifwill not handle high bit rates like 96/24 5.1 streams, so that is not an option for DVD-Audio). this unit also plays SACD, tho i only have a few titles, it's nice to have. both SACD and DVD-Audio will probably disappear, but one can pick up good used deals on...
