Summary: To replace an old DVD player than had simply worn out, I selected this one because it combines a small footprint and relatively low cost with S-Video outputs, which I needed for compatibility with the rest of my aging gear. Since S-Video is disappearing in favor of more modern standards, I considered this unit a fortunate find. It works fine, and I have no complaints apart from what seems to me to be the relatively slow disc recognition ("load") time noted above.
Summary: [...]My new player was the exact same model as before, my system only had a change in speaker cables, which I feel may have added some to the more involving sound. This is debatable, but I am one of those that believe speaker cables impact the sound. Overall I felt the player now deserved the 5 stars, the DVD and 5.1 playback were better than the earlier 406 sent to me.
Pros: Consistent Performance, Easy To Use, High Quality Picture
Summary: Bought this hoping it would serve as both a DVD player as well as a CD player. It does do both but playing a music CD is not as user friendly as I hoped. The player does not show the track number being played and it's difficult to move from track to track. Additionally this item does not use the Onkyo IR feature to interact with the Onkyo receiver.
Summary: Connected to an older Onkyo TX DS777, but a killer still, speakers were Vandersteen 1's 2 way floor standing, very revealing speakers and a Samsung T4871F LCD TV. Toslink and HDMI cables were nothing special and are what I used for hookup. My system is set up for surround sound and a sound level meter as well as distance was used for a proper setup. The picture quality is outstanding with the 406 as long as the DVD quality was good.
Pros: Easy To Set Up, Easy To Use, High Quality Picture
Cons: Flimsy Construction, Uninvolving sound quality, Video playback problem
