It too has the Faroudja DCDi chipset that upscales the discs to high definition. If a CD inserted in this player is a bit dirty, a message saying “Error: Disc minor – clean me” will pop up in the screen.

Review Summary

NAD T585 is a High Definition Interface (HDMI) DVD player with a HDCP encryption which allows high definition audio and video signals to be transferred between source components, processors, and video displays in a pure digital format. It basically has an excellent sound reproduction and on the outer part; an iconic design. When using HDMI connectivity, you will also take advantage of the Faroujda DCDi chip that effectively upconverts standard (480 lines) to the High Definition formats of 720p or 1080i. Naturally, the T585 also supports all the popular DVD-Video features such as fast and slow scan, multi-language, multi-angle, A-B repeat and last scene ‘bookmarking’. However, unlike many “universal” DVD players, the T585 does not convert the SACD’s SD format into CD’s PCM format. So the DSD signal paths have to be kept separate to maintain the highest level possible of DVD, CD and SACD audio quality. Behind the player is an array of AV connections that includes HDMI 1.1 component, two-channel and 5.1 audio outputs (24-bit/192kHz 'hybrid' digital-to-analogue converters). The video processor includes adjustments for black level, colour saturation and gamma but not noise reduction. They have to be accessed from the main menu though, which means you can't immediately see their effects on playback. The T585 has no truck with codecs like DivX, XviD and WMV. Although NAD has bought in Faroudja's familiar DCDi deinterlacing technology, scaling only goes as far as 1080i. In other words, there's no 1080p option. There’s also a VGA output, which is highly unusual on budget DVD players. The HDCD-compatible hardware found in the T585 looks for special 'helper' content that boosts the resolution from the traditional 16 bits to a useful 20; to recognize discs. As an audio player, the T585 is highly impressive and is one of the nicest-sounding DVD players in its price range.
