  • Summary: Hopefully I won't have the same issues many others have ran into. That said, it does seem like it may be an easy fix.
  • Pros: So far I am very happy with this DVD Recorder. It's played just about everything I have tried.
  • Cons: Display on the unit can be hard to read. Takes a while to load disc. Doesn't support Dual/Double Layer disc.

Lite-on DVD recorders-unreliable

carrie b., Newegg
9 October 2007
  • Summary: At this price it may be worth the risk since it will most likely work as a dvd/cd player at worst. On the other hand dvd recorders are getting very cheap. I would get a different brand.
  • Pros: Records on multi-formats, cd is nice too. Easy to operate. Made by HP-I think.
  • Cons: Mine and my dad's failed. They will both read original discs but give disc error message when a blank is put in. We tried many different brands.

LITE-ON DVD Recorder

James B., Newegg
9 October 2007
  • Summary: Very disappointing. Couldn't give me one if I had to used it.. More trouble than it worth.
  • Pros: Easy to use , small footprint, low cost.
  • Cons: Not dependable. If you need to record something and only have one shot at it use something else. Will record whole program but that it won't finalized. End results a coaster. Not the quality of Lite-on computer DVD drtives.

Gave up and bought a Panasonic

Malcolm J., Newegg
29 September 2007
  • Summary: It's a great dvd recorder and if you have problems, don't be afraid to take the cover off and clean the rails. I'd tried compressed air, but it evidently wasn't enough to get the dirt off the rails!
  • Pros: I love this dvd recorder! Extremely easy to use. I just replaced the Lite-On with a Panasonic DMR-EZ17S, the Panasonic was much more expensive and may be a better recorder, but the Lite-On was much more user friendly and seems to me to do as good a job!
  • Cons: My Lite-On seemed to have the same problems as most of the other reviewers. It quit recognizing dvds, would get part way through "preparing" the dvd and then would quit and say "invalid disk". I gave up and bought the Panasonic. I gave the Lite-on to a friend and said good luck! He took the cover ...

Disposable Product.

Ole D., Newegg
25 September 2007
  • Summary: My experience with this product is consistent with other reviewers, reporting the same problem. If you are not ready to fork over $250 for a decent DVD Recorder, don't throw away your VCR!
  • Pros: Inexpensive. Nice design.
  • Cons: No S-VHS connection. Will work OK for about a year, then starts reporting "No Disc" or "Invalid Disc", no matter what you put in it, except for music CD's.

So Far, So Good

John T., Newegg
24 September 2007
  • Summary: I have two of these recorders now since I'm waiting for the digital DVD recorders to develop further before investing that kind of money into a Sony or Toshiba with a digital tuner.
  • Pros: Inexpensive, records on just about any media, multi format
  • Cons: Very basic recorder, no advanced output connectors like HDMI

Good, cheap, but don't buy!

Tony L., Newegg
23 September 2007
  • Summary: I have owned two lite-on recorders in the 5000 series. I loved them at first because of the all-write feature and nice features. Luckily when they died I was able to return for a full refund because the big box retail outlet (name rhymes with Roscoe) has a generous policy.
  • Pros: Cheap and it works great, for awhile.
  • Cons: Will stop recording and have problems reading discs after some time regardless of use pattern.

DJ

Daniel J., Newegg
15 September 2007
  • Summary: Would not recommend this unit at all!
  • Pros: Cheap, and easy to use.
  • Cons: Had intermittent write failures one week after purchase, and would stop recording after a few minutes of use, that started about two months afterwards, now it will not record at all! Did not even last six months.

great while it lasts

Kelly C., Newegg
1 September 2007
  • Summary: If this is your primary source of recording TV, don't throw away your VCR.
  • Pros: Worked great at first, easy to understand menu. I like how easy it was to backup my old VHS home movies to DVD.
  • Cons: Started glitching after about 6 months, I'm now in the market for a replacement. Doesn't record reliably, won't finalize, timer recording doesn't work at all. Still works fine as a player though.
