The DVD-1940 is compatible with a wide variety of media types including DVD Audio, DVD Video, DVD-R, DVD+R, DVD-RW, CD Audio, VCD, S-VCD, SA-CD, CD-R, CD+R, Kodak Picture CD, and Fujicolor CD. The player also supports the MP3, WMA, JPEG, and DivX digital media standards.

The Denon DVD-1940 features manual and track search functions, picture adjustment functions, and forward and backward playback in variable speeds. Its playback features include track, chapter, disc, and A-B repeat modes. It also has programming features for up to 99 tracks.

The DVD-1940 has built-in Dolby Digital and DTS decoders and is equipped with 24-bit/ 192-kHz high resolution audio digital-to-analog converters. It also has settings for Virtual Surround Sound (VSS) and bass management features.

Apart from an HDCP-compliant HDMI (v1.1) connector, the DVD-1940 offers a variety of other terminals for composite video, component video, SCART, S-Video, digital optical, digital coaxial, analog audio, and 6ch audio.

A standard package of the Denon DVD-1940 includes an RC-1017 remote control.
