WWE SmackDown! vs. RAW 2009
2 July 2009
Summary: The year of redemption for this long-serving franchise.
Pros: More wrestlers, modes, and options than the competition; solid new single-player career modes; tag-team mechanics are a respectable addition to standard gameplay; Improved load-times and actually useful loading-screens; nice incorporation of unlockable content.
Cons: Create-a-Finisher is more like a "modify a finisher"; AI is still largely inconsistent; inferno match is an unspectacular new match type; Create-A-Character is in need of a genuine overhaul; still plagued with a bevy of loading screens to sit through.
Summary: THQ's sophomore effort on the DS is solid, if you can look past the sluggish controls.
Pros: Remarkable graphics, especially with the wrestlers; decent number of matches and grapplers to choose from; some options make excellent use of the DS's capabilities; excellent Create-A-Character option that puts the next-gen titles to shame; satisfying multi-player experience
Cons: Gameplay is both sluggish and unresponsive due to stylus control; career mode is not really all that innovative; AI is largely inconsistent; provides no alternative control-scheme outside of the default stylus option; only one save slot for Career mode and two slots for created characters
Excerpt: Take the Ring on the Road World Wrestling Entertainment brings us their latest edition of its popular video game, Smackdown Vs Raw 2009. Being a massive WWE fan ever since the late 80′s, I got a surge of excitement when I was given the opportunity to write a review of it for the Nintendo DS. Having not tried a wrestling game on this format I was unsure what to expect in regards to visuals, gameplay and sound in comparison to my normal Xbox360 December purchase.
Pros: Over 25 WWE Superstars to Choose From, Plenty of Match Modes, Clever New Control System, Improved New Season Mode, Authentic Entrance Sequences and Music, A Must Have For Any True WWE Fans
Cons: Repetitive Game play but plenty of superstars to explore, New control method requires some practice and patience, Graphics Not As Good As Other Systems, Rated 15 Which Could Hinder the Younger Fans
