Excerpt: By Kevin "Berserker" Hall Player(s): 1-2 Multiplayer Option(s): single card play, multi-card play, online Wi-Fi play Back in the mid-90's many fighting fans had only one fighting game series on their mind - either Mortal Kombat or Street Fighter, or perhaps both. The MK series' third installment marked the end of its 2-D appearance and ushered in the 3-D style games that we now know.
Excerpt: The Mortal Kombat franchise has been around since the SNES/Genesis days. Indeed, it caused quite a scandal upon its first release, part of it revolving around the gruesome nature of the game and part of it revolving around the decision by Nintendo to force Midway to censure it on the SNES version. How times have changed. Now Midway has released its first Mortal Kombat game for the DS, although by no means is it anything original.
Excerpt: The last portable Mortal Kombat game I played wasn't very good. I used to play the version on the Sega Game Gear back when I lived in California in the mid 90s. The game didn't play too well at all, the graphics were of a pretty low quality, and there were only two buttons on the Game Gear! How could I be expected to play Mortal Kombat with only two buttons? I was young and naive, though -- I thought a ton of games like this were really fun then. I was easy to please.
Excerpt: If you enjoy ripping people’s heads off, or cracking your mate in the nuts before shoving a fireball up his ass, several men dressed in white lab coats will be seeing you very shortly. In the meantime, why don’t you pick up a DS and a copy of Ultimate Mortal Kombat to quench your thirst for ruthless bloodletting? If you are looking for mindless violence on the DS, look no further than Ultimate Mortal Kombat .
Conclusion: power-up bar is at full. Ho hum. It’s a little better when played head-to-head because you can trash talk, though over Wi-Fi Connection that’s lost. Faring much better is a great translation of Mortal Kombat 3 – great animation, big characters, good audio, etc. If it weren’t for the small directional pad of the DS, this would be an awesome arcade translation.
