Tony Hawk's Downhill Jam (DS) Review
15 July 2007
Summary: (at least the DS version [gimme a break, I just got my Wii a few days ago]) is a fresh take on the Birdman’s signature skateboarding series that has been in need for a very long time. The racing action combined with the freestyle skating mechanics is a nice change of pace that harkens back to the downhill levels of the earlier Tony Hawk games.
Conclusion: Tony Hawk’s Downhill Jam is a decent skating game with a unique idea and ambition – unfortunately, the unique idea is very much at odds with what has came before it and doesn’t actually make the series any more enjoyable and in places, quite the opposite is true. Saying that, it is still a solid title from the Hawk stable and makes one wonder that with the control scheme supposedly in place for the Wii version, it could be a formula improved on for future titles.
Excerpt: Tony Hawk's Downhill Jam is sort of like a THPS lite, but that doesn't make it a game you should avoid. Building on the old-school THPS timed gameplay style, Downhill Jam offers up some quality gameplay on the Nintendo DS. If you're looking for something a little less intense than THUG or Project 8 for your daily commute or li'l skater-in-training, the you could do worse than grabbing Downhill Jam. Check out Matt's review for the details.
Pros: ups: Love the ability to hand draw your own board design
Cons: downs: The graphics can't touch it's big brother counterparts, Only six levels to play
Excerpt: In order to capitalize on the unique control methods of Nintendo’s DS and brand new Wii, Activision switched things up a little with Tony Hawk’s Downhill Jam. No longer a free-roaming skateboarding game, Tony Hawk’s Downhill Jam focuses on the high speeds and tight turns of downhill skateboarding races.
Pros: Adds a Tony Hawk twist to what is primarily a racing game, 3D graphics are impressive considering the hardware, plenty to do if you want to unlock all of the boards and outfits
Cons: This isn't the trick-filled Tony Hawk experience you're used to, audio is weak, apart from the recorded dialogue in the cutaways, obstacles can sneak up on you thanks to the limited sight distance
